Engine noise knocking

I have a 95 limited v6 4wd automatic. After a head gasket repair the engine has not sounded right, knocking and pinging getting bad milage and poor pickup too. The only error code is on the 71 EGR valve.

By any chance did you make sure your Timing marks were set properly when you put the new Timing belt in?

That I can not be sure of at the time of the head gasket repair, but not two weeks ago, the timing was checked, and found to be off, and re paired which did make an improvement.

What was checked, IGN Timing or Cam Timing?

I believe it was cam timing.
