Engine Oil

I am proud owner of a 4Runner Sport Edition V8 4x4. This is my 4th Toyota car (Corolla 97, Corolla 2000, Corolla 2002)

One question I have, according to the manual engine oil should spec should be 5W-40 or 10W-30.

What is the difference between both?

I live in Venezuela, where temperature ranges between 70F and 90F. No snow in the country.

The other question I have is that according to Manual, engine oil change should be made every 5 thousan miles. However, I know some people that performs engine change more frequently.

Send me some 20cent gas and I'll let you know what I think:biggrin2:

In this country we use lighter viscosity for improved mpg. If I were you, driving there, I would probably run 5w-40. If I used non-synthetic I might shorten the interval... I 'adjust' my interval somewhat based on usage. If I'm towing, driving hard or lots of short trips I'll shorten the interval a little bit. If it's all easy, highway miles I'll run it 5k.

OK, CJFlyr, thanks for your answer.
Regarding the 20 cents of gas, with current gas prices in Venezuela, 20 US cents = 2 gallons of premium fuel!!!

If you're going for max life good filters are very important too. There are several threads here, a few good filter options and once you sort through it all the Toyota filter is worth it, IMHO.

Yeah, that's why I got two dozen of engine oil filters plus air filters in miami at the beginning of this year (toyota original parts)
