Engine or Transmission whine

Hey guys...im new to this site and just took over my sisters 4runner. Im trying to fix it up where it is going to be a decent daily but need to make sure its going to be worth it. The car is a 2004 v6 4runner with 235,000 miles lol, but all the miles were put on highway basically as she has been driving 100 miles daily.

There is a noticeable whine/thump noise that is consistent with rpms/gear rotation. I cant tell if its coming from the engine or the transmission as its consistent with both. So is there a known problem with either?

Im planning on doing all fluid changes (transmission, engine, diff, transfer case, coolant, etc)...is there anything else I should do like wheel hub bears, suspension parts like control arms?

Any help would be great...thanks guys.

Could be the idler pulleys for the serpentine belt. Try taking the belt off and running for 30 seconds or so and see if that changes anything ?

oh forgot to say that it doesnt make the noise in neutral revving it so i also assumed it was the transmission because of that lol...its only noticeable when actually moving in gear.
 
Ok do hit the zerks on the driveshaft with a grease gun to lube up the slip joint, should help with some of the clunk.

Does it clunk when shifting from park or neutral to drive or reverse, or more when you slowdown to a stop and let off the brake?

At those miles, do 2 drain and fills in the trans, it may help.

sweet thanks...but does anyone think the car is going to die soon so i should just quit the car? lol
 
Have the wheel bearings ever been changed?

A whining transmission is not good, though fresh Toyota ATF may help.

If it a whine while the truck is moving, it could be wheel bearing too. Does it whine in park or only in gear? What speeds does it start whining?

Wheel bearings have never been changed and it only woes while the truck is moving and starts at like 5mph. Thanks for the help too
 
Obviously we can only do so much diagnosis on the interweb. Perhaps you could make a small video and post it on YouTube so that we could all hear it and make recommendations from there?

A wheel bearing will tend to make more of a low frequency noise, where a transmission or gear-train would be higher pitched. Do things such as get onto an open road at around 35-45 and do a gentle, gradual back and forth of the steering (Like they do in Nascar to clean off the tires) and see if the noise changes any. Wheel bearings will change in tone/pitch and intensity from side to side. Also when driving at that speed, manually shift the transmission into a lower gear. A wheel bearing will not change in noise here, because it is based on road speed. Also carrier bearing and differential noises will not change. If the noise does change a significant amount, then you would most likely be looking at engine/transmission noises.

Thanks and I also just found out that the noise was much louder before from a belt and it was replaced. The noise got better and the tech said it will make noise in the beginning but should go away eventually. But it's still here
