Engine Rattle

Hi folks

I have an 04' with 135,000 miles. Lately when I start it in the morning I hear an engine rattle--sounds like it is coming from underneith the driver's floor boards. I thought at first it might be a loose muffler mount but after looking around I didn't see anything.

I was just wondering if anybody else had anything like this. I know it could be a million different things. But sometimes vehicles have known problems. I'm unemployed and I can't take it in right now.

Any thoughts?

more about the rattle

The rattle started in the late summer and rattles even when its warm.

Here is some more detail:

1) cold engine start
2) 2 secs later rattle starts
3) 5 secs later rattle quiets
4) gets louder with intitial acceleration

could this be valve knock? I have assumed (perhaps wrongly) that these 4G don't need the valves adjusted.

I know this is probably a futile post but I was hoping somebody might say, "Oh Ya, I had the exact same issue"

Thanks

if you had valves knocking, a light would occur in the dash. Anyway you can get a video of this that captures the sound? MANY of these 4th gens have a horrible ticking noise, as well as mine, and my moms.

Hi,
Just found my rattle.
Check the exhaust header brackets that go to the fglange joint for rear cat and rest of exhaust.
Both of mine were cracked through at the flange
Removed brackets and noise is gone.
Have ordered new brackets

After reading through a lot of posts regarding the rattles on 4th gens, I finally found my culprit.

The source of the rattle was loose A/C Compressor bolts. I poked around with a stethoscope and was able to pinpoint the issue.

The rattle was only present while in gear (drive or reverse) in the 500 to 1000 rpm range. Sometimes turning on the A/C made it go away, other times it didn't change it all.

Hope this helps some of you!
