Engine rebuild question

I'm elbow deep into rebuilding my 22re. I have rebuilt heads but never the whole thing. I am ready to put the new pistons in and button up the bottom end. So do I need to lube the pistions and or cylinders before I put them in?

Make sure the rings are installed correctly, and the gaps are positioned correctly. Use assembly lube on the rod bearings. I like to put a light coating of motor oil on the bores, and piston skirts.

Yeah I saw in the Chiltons about the positioning of the rings, but just so I know for sure the notch on the edge of the piston faces the timing chain correct?

Im not 100% sure but that sound right to have the notch toward the front of the engine i rebuilt one before ours didnt have the notch but that may have been because we had oversized pistons and we used the lucas oil assy. lube and it worked wonderful

I've always used a moly-coat assembly lube. Do you have the ring compression tool?

Yeah, it's my grandfathers so it's pretty ancent but if it worked in the 50's it will work now right? lol

I oil everything liberally prior to install. I even use a rag soaked in oil to wipe the cylinders, before dropping the pistons in.
it will smoke like a chimney for a few minutes when you first start it, don't be alarmed.

I was thinking about using the assembly lube i used on everything else, is that overkill?

And another question, the Chiltons is talking about checking the crankshaft end play? I don't even know how to check that or where or with what.
