engine rebuild

My wife owns a '99 4runner 2WD V6. She's itching for a new car. Well, I'll have to say that this 4runner has been an absolutely great vehicle and there's nothing wrong with it. Instead of trading it in I'd like to rebuild the engine and transmission, paint it and keep it for myself. I even have a leftover chevy 350 block from one of my old vette rebuilds I might even consider trying to fit in there :)
Here's my questions:
Have any of you rebuilt one of these Toyota V6 engines? If so, were there any gotchas? Which rebuild kit did you use?
Any idea what model automatic trans is in this thing? I'm having a hard time getting an ID on it. Have any of you rebuilt one of these transmissions?
Most of my rebuild experience is on old 350 V8s with no smog crap and TH350 3 speed transsmissions.

Thanks for any input.

I'm confused... Why would you rebuild the engine and tranny if "there's nothing wrong with it"? It's a Toyota man if there's nothing wrong with it, then there probably won't be for a long time. These trucks are designed to go 3-400K+ before you need to rebuild the engine/tranny. Mine has 200K and I'm sure it'll go to 300K and beyond becaus eit's still powerful. Fitting a V8 in there is more trouble than it's worth IMO, that's why almost nobody does it. If you want more power throw a TRD supercharger on there.
