Is it better to rebuild my v6 or just replace it? Of replacing where is the best place to order one?

A little more information would be helpful to determine whether or not a rebuild would be advisable.

Bout to blow a rod.. replace

Need to do head gasket service.. rebuild

Just an oil leak from the valve gasket and rear main but I have 255000

How do you know it's coming from the rear main seal?

most people just get a JDM motor and swap it in.

For that I would definitely do a rebuild.

Regarding an engine replacement, it would depend on what kind & how bad the damage was. Also, the extent of detailed maintenance history you have on your current engine should be factored in.

Edit: The "rebuild" I was referring to was replacing the valve cover gaskets, seals, etc since that was the suspected issue & not an actual rebuild.

Replace so you are back on the road, rebuild so you get the experience

Either way, spare engines make fascinating coffee tables

Let me get this straight, you are going to replace or rebuild because of a couple oil leaks? Are they really really bad oil leaks?

Even if, just fix the leaks. You can always try a stop leak product, it worked great on my ZJ.

255k miles is not that much on these engines. Unless you are having other issues, I would just fix the leaks.

Used stop leak it slows it but still leaking. I'm only asking because I'm interested in learning more about the motor so if I replace with a JDM I can strip it and learn about it myself by rebuilding but if it's cheaper and easier I'll just replace it in another 200k lol and fix it for now

I would personally just deal with the oil leaks unless its really bad. The valve cover aren't too bad to fix but the rear main is definitely more involved, getting to the rear main seal is the hard part. Rear main leaks are pretty rare on these trucks so I would make sure its not just the valve covers leaking first.

Unless I really knew what I was doing, I wouldn't try rebuilding. I would either swap in a used one or go the JDM route.

A couple oil leaks? That's not a rebuild. Replace those valve cover gaskets, then do a good clean of the engine bay. You'll probably find that's all you need to do. (the valve cover gaskets leak out the back most, and make it looks like something is leaking on the back of the motor)

I'm hoping this is the case just looking for opinions incase it is the rear main.

If it is the rear main, pull the trans and replace the seal...

Its right there behind the flywheel or flexplate:

Have you done a compression test or a leak-down test?

It would not be uncommon for one of these engines to have 300K miles and still have perfect compression, and burn no oil. So unless you've had a catastrophic event like a severe overheat, or run without oil pressure, you're probably fine.

Fix the leak(s), and you're likely good for another 200K plus.

There is a series of really detailed videos on how to rebuild the 5vz on YouTube. I think it's 6 total videos. If you want to learn how to rebuild

I second the compression test. No need for leakdown test unless the compression test shows unfavorable results. Compression test kit is very cheap at Harbor Freight.

Ok, like thegipper and phattyduck mentioned, I don't get it either. Why are we talking about engine rebuilds when he just has a couple oil leaks? These engines can last into the 400,000's.

OP, infamousRNR have two videos for you. For the trans replacement video, disregard separating the transfer case from the transmission. Do everything else we show in the video and either pull the transmission and transfer case assembly back far enough so you have room to pull the flex plate and replace the rear main seal or just drop it to the ground and get it out of the way completely. The trans replacement isn't technically hard, it's just time consuming. It does help a lot to have another person though so get a buddy to help you.

Here's the videos. If you have any questions, just ask.

Was thinking replace it and teach myself how to rebuild the old one.

Most people cannot teach themselves to rebuild a 5VZ-FE. The key thing is finding a quality machine shop to do the rebuild for you. Do you have access to a quality machine shop?

And as already said 1) no need to rebuild because of a few leaks 2) most people who ask this question in the first place aren't likely to succeed down this path

There are many risks with a JDM. Do a search for "JDM swap" using the advanced search function below.

sure its true some of these will go 400K...others don't make it to 200K. I'd be on the lookout for a low mileage swap.
