engine start button

I have an 04 4Runner and I was thinking about installing one of those Engine Start Buttons from Ignited Performance (you know, like the ones that come stock on the Honda S2000). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any prior knowledge about installing something like this or if anyone had any idea of how difficult something like this would be to install.

I've enclosed a diagram of the Ignited's install instructions. Does anyone know which wires I would need to find/connect. Thanks guys for all your help!

I would say you have a good chance of being able to install a Start button. Since the 4th gen's "START" position works like a button already. Question is, does the start position have its own wire or not.

If it can be done - it would be cool to get the actual S2000 button as well a rig it into the scheme somehow.

I like the idea...very original.

guess it's possible. you'd still have to get past the engine immobilizer...first pdf attached (pdfs are from 2004 EWD for 4runner) you'd also hve to deal with setting up the "On" stuff such that stuff turned on and all. that's in the ignition circuit stuff, tho...

At first glance, this shouldn't be much different than installing a remote starter. Since the T4R already has a computer controlled starter, it looks like a no brainer. I belive the starter disable circuit can be bypassed by taping one of your keys near the key coil (shown in the above pdf) ... same thing you have to do to install the remote starter.

I'm not sure how you get around enabling the ignition circuit. Doesn't the S2000 still require you to use the key to first turn on the ignition, and then the button to start the engine?

I'm not really concerned about getting the car to start without a key (although that would be really interesting). From what I understand, I would still need to put the key into the ignition anyway to unlock the streering column. So all I'm trying to do is try and figure out which wires I'm gonna need to connect the ignition relay and the engine start button to to get this thing to work properly.

I actually thought about getting the real S2000 button (it's actually cheaper that the Ignited one), but it doesn't light up as bright and requires a little more modification.

Anyways, thanks for all your help guys. Please keep the comments and ideas coming!

Ok, I'm sorta confused. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you've got the key in the ignition already and have to turn it to on, why would you want a button to "start" rather than just twist one little bit more? what's the advantage of a button?

And I thought that I was going to have to ask. :D

OK, I'm not really sure why this switch uses two 12v switched inputs. I assume one is passed through to the starter circuit and the other is used for lighting the switch (perhaps)?

In any case, here is the break down on what you need to do. You need a switch that momentarily pulls pin 8 (green wire with black stripe) on the ignition switch (I18) to +12v. From that point, the ECM in the 4runner takes over to assure a successful start or graceful abort.

I'd say pin 2 (ground) on the button is fairly obvious. Pin 3 goes to pin 8 of I18. Pins 1 and 4 of the button go to a switched 12v lead. This circuit might need to supply upto 7.5A plus whatever the light in the button needs. You have two choices here. You can tap an existing circuit (maybe a bad idea), or you can extend the 30A AM2 fused circuit that feeds the oem ignition switch. Since AM2 is always powered, you will need to add a relay that is switched by one of your accessory 12v circuits. Since the relay only draws a few mAmps, that's a safe way to go about it.

I18 Pin 2 (Red)--Relay SW--Button Pins 1,4
Any +12v accessory lead--Relay Coil--GND
Button Pin 2--GND
Button Pin 3--I18 Pin 8 (G-B)

Depending on what kind of relay you use and which accessory line you tap, you might want to throw a 1000V 1A diode across the relay coil to shunt the reverse EMF generated by the relay coil when it collapses. Some automotive relays have this built in.

If you just want to wing it, you can forgo the relay and just tie pins 1,4 to an accessory line. There are MANY in the truck.

These are just my thoughts. I haven't done this and have no idea if it will work. You should assume that I am completely wrong and double check everything before you make any changes to your truck. In any event, I am not responsible for anything that happens to you or your truck.

Have fun!

Hahaha ... no offense taken. To be honest, I don't think there really is an advantage to having a start button - I mean all it does is add an extra step to starting your car. But then again, how many times have we all done something just because it was a little different or because we thought it was pretty sweet.

... plus it adds an additional 20 hp :naughty:

When I read the subject of this thread I had my fingers crossed that it was going to be about a mod to make the ignition like the Toyota Prius. That would actually be useful, as opposed to adding another step to start your car. But then again, buttons are pretty fun to press.

Just in case everyone isn't familiar with how the hybrid Prius starts, here is my understanding. You carry a bluetooth transmitter in your pocket, that has a tiny key integrated into it (I guess to be used in the event of a bluetooth failure), that when you get close to your car it will unlock the doors, and when you get in, all you have to do is press the button on the dash to start the car. Now that is some serious horsepower and something I would jump all over.

Where are you thinking about mounting your button?

I was actually thinking about installing the replacement ashtray assembly in the center console and then replacing the cigarette lighter in the assembly with the start button. I figure that will probably give it the most factory look/feel to it and require the least amount of dashboard-hacking.

But now that you mention that Prius Bluetooth deal, the wheels in my head are turning yet again. I wonder if that's the same system they have installed on some of the newer Lexus'?

Curse you Luxury ... Curse you and your infernal ideas! (raising fist in air) :cursin:

Sorry. I say similar things to myself a lot of times.

With that said, let me try to fuel the fire a little more. Seems to me Toyota would use the same system across their product line. You would be the man if you hook that up. I don't think there are many people that could resist this mod if they see it successfully installed. Now, to take it one step further. How about having your bluetooth enabled cellphone be your key.......convergence.....and talk about the WOW factor!

This raises the question...The Prius and the Land Cruiser use the Bluetooth option through their Navi. In other words, you have to have the Navi with Bluetooth to have the keyless entry/start etc. Would it be possible to use that Navi with the bluetooth go that route? It may be impossible judging the many systems that would be effected (doors, starter, etc.). Also the Prius Navi may not work since it is a telemetry like system for the electric/gas engine. Now the Land Cruiser is a different story. Since it has an old school gas engine like the T4R you may not run into the same compatability issues.

One more thing though, I sure don't want to have to buy the key fob...the T4R keyless is already expensive, i can't even imagine what a Bluetooth cost.

Anyway, just thinking outloud. Maybe someone with some actual engineering knowledge can help me understand if this is possible or if I am just dreaming.:p

This thread discusses what you are suggesting:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3835&highlight=bluetooth

It seems like the latest theory is that a bluetooth module is built into the nav headunit. What I am now wondering is if that is only for using a wireless phone through the Nav/audio system......and is there a seperate bluetooth setup for the proximity entry system.

Looks like a carpc is the way to go if you want to do just about anything.

Regarding the bluetooth entry/start system:

OK, so I don't speak any Japanese, but the fourth accessory down on the left (after clicking on the "easy drive and parking" icon on this Hilux Surf Japanese accessories page looks promising:

Can anyone translate?
