Engine Swap

Howdy. I am finally finishing fixing up my 84 4Runner, and I heard that you can take a 2nd Gen V6 engine and put it in a 1st Gen 4Runner. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, what year engine/engine model do I need to get? I would love to take out my old 22R engine and give my baby a boost. Thanks for any help. Much obliged.

Does it fit as is or does it need modification?

Nothing fits your 4Runner besides a 22R without extensive modification. Even a 22RE, with EFI, takes quite a bit of modification (although the block will bolt right in).

You need to do lots of research (try google, pirate4x4.com, IH8mud.com, etc.) before you decide to swap engines and/or find someone with experience and pay them to do it for you.

The 3.4 has been done but, again, it's not plug 'n play by any stretch of the imagination.

un fortunately Alabama4Runner is right. engine swaps are a hecitc deal with 22RE or 22R. if you had the 3vze, a 3.4 ( 5vze) from a taco or runner would almost be a DIRECT plug and play, with very little mods. if you wanted immense power, look at JDM for a yota supra 7MGTE. that will require not as much mods as others, and boasts 240 HP and something like 260 ft/lbs of torque. if you want additional info on it, feel free to PM me. cheers

Thanks guys. Now, I can get my hands on 3VZE from an 88-95 4Runner no problem. But I would like to get the 5VZE engine in my 4Runner so I can use the optional TRD Supercharger. But it would probably be cheaper and easier to go with the 3VZE in the long run.

it may be cheaper and easier up front, but it definitely wont be in the long run. the 3vz has the power of a 4 cyl and the fuel economy of a v8, so i dont think you would get much of the 'boost' you are looking for. They dont call it the 3.slow for nothing.
