Does anyone know if it is possible to swap from a Gen 2 with automatic 4x4 3.0 engine and put a 4.0 engine in its place?

Possible... yes. Worth it... no. provided your talking about a jeep I6 4.0l.
Its too long to make everything work under the hood.
You would have to push the firewall back.
You would have to replace the trans/t-case since i don't believe there is an adapter for 4.0l to toyota transmission.

If your talking about a 4.0l ford sohc, then its more reasonable but you still have to replace trans/t-case since again there isn't an adapter that goes from ford 4.0l to toyota.

Best bet is to stick with what there are parts for unless you know a good machinist that can make bellhousing adapters.

Anything is possible. Just depends on how much time and money you want to put in it. Your talking about moving everything...engine, tranny, tcase, wiring harness, emissions, electronics. Itll will deff be a big job, but cool to be completed.

I guess I asked the question incorrectly. I agree just about anything is possible. I was wondering if anyone had done this and if so what was some of the issues that came up and how did it work out. The 3.0 and the 3.4 are too weak in power for my taste that was why I was looking at the 4.0.
I heard someone say that the 4.0 is so long and tall that it has to be tilted downwards in the back to get it in even in the models it comes in and I was not sure if it would even fit in an earlier model with a 4 wheel drive.

i seen a 2nd gen with a 4.7 v8 in it, but that dude dose baja runs in mexico i think, all i remember when i saw it in front of the audioshop i go to, it had a 3rd gen sport hood on it, also some custom fenders.
why not try and stuff the 4.7 v8? its been done.

As Hyde802 stated, you'd have to swap everything, plus exhaust, cooling. You'd have to fab new engine mounts, etc. A boat load of work. Swapping in a Chevy 4.3 would be easier.
