Engine tick, 1994

Hi, I am new to the forums, just got my first 4runner.
I just bought a 1994 with 171,000 the other day and am wondering others take on it. Seems to run okay for its age and miles. Had to drive it 150miles home the other day and it was okay driving. The head gasket was done at 140,000 along with new belts, seals, etc. From what the previous owner told me, it had a pretty good overhaul then.

BUT, the engine has a tick that increases in frequency when the engine speeds up. The loudness of the tick stays the same and it is pretty loud. It just speeds up. Took it to a mechanic to have it checked out the other day and he said everything was looking good and wasn't sure where the tick was coming from. My guess is I need a second opinion, but in the mean time, I was wondering if anyone had insight on what might be causing it? Seems to be a little lack of power too.

Also, the rpms seem high to me when going at higher speeds. Is 3000+ normal at 70mph? Just has me worried because my Tundra, what I am used to, never gets that high, runs around 2500 max at those speeds.

I'm guessing it's a 3.0 automatic? Also mine has a tick to, it's just the valve's and i'm told that it's nothing to worry about.

It is indeed a 3.0 automatic. I guess it is just alarming to me that it seems so loud. Maybe the cd player just needs to go up a bit Really I was wondering if the tick could somehow be related to the lack of power/highish rpms or if thats a completely unrelated.

No my 3.0 automatic has high RPMs at that speed to, it's normal for them as far as i noticed. I can no longer here my tick over my new tire's. arty:

Just turn you music up and it goes away. Normal for this engine from what I've been reading. My sounds like an old Uhaul when I'm on the highway.

yea i have a 93 3.0 and mine does the exact same thing. nothing wrong i guess haha i jam my music loud anyway lol

Mine ticks and we pin pointed it to the fuel pressure regulator (see pic). It sits on top of engine and when I put my hand on it I can feel the ticking.

Im told its nothing to worry about and havnt had any probs in 2 years.

Mine is a 5 speed and for 70 mph I average just over 3000rpm as well.
