Engine Trouble Code Readout on Odometer Screen?

Alright, here is my question. My friend has a 2001 Dodge Dakota that had a CEL come on recently. He found out on a forum that by doing some combination of turning the ignition key off and on a couple times, it would actually show the trouble code on his odometer readout (its digital). So my question is...does the 4runner have this capability? Seems like it would be great if it did.

To the best of my knowledge the answer is no. I have a Jeep and the Codes can be extracted by the description you give, but I bought a Scanner for my runner.

I don't believe Toyota has had that feature since the OBD II port became standard.

There are a few specific subsystems (like the TPMS) that will still flash out codes on one of the dash lights if you short a couple of pins on the OBD II port.

I know what you're referring to. My '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee had this feature where you could turn the key on and off in three cycles and it would spit out CEL codes. Pretty convenient if you didn't have a scanner. Far as I know the 4Runner doesn't do this.
