Engine Washing/Engine Miss!!!

This post is for the benefit of others. I cleaned my engine two days ago because I am trying to ensure that there are no fluid leaks and identify the source if there are any, enough justification there. I was not very careful in that I did not cover things prior to starting. For me it is not as simple as running in the house to get some plastic bags, way longer story there. I was mostly going for the firewall, suspension motor front, bellhousing etc however I must have come in contact with the RH valve cover and gotten water in #4 spark plug recess because the engine started to miss pretty bad, check engine light etc, etc. I had the code read and cleared, purchased WD-40 and some electrical contact cleaner, removed the boot/coil for #4 cylinder. Upon removal sure enough there was water on the coil. I generously sprayed the boot/coil, plug recess, as well as other electrical components under the hood. Once dry I sprayed everything down with WD-40. Started the engine and nice and smooth running first time. Total spent about 20 min and $10 to fix. I though I would put this up for reference. I acknowledge there is nothing revolutionary or genius here but some may find it useful.

No doubt. Thanks dude. I always wash out my engine compartment at the end of winter to knock out the salt residue but never bother to cover anything. I just stay away from the alternator and air filter. Do you usually cover anything else? Oh and I've heard that it's better to leave the engine running, but didn't get an explanation. Thoughts anyone?

what happend to me, i washed my engine, did the same thing, did not protect anything.


so i finaly got it running again and i found out water can get in the spark plug wells really easy! and you basicly have to run the car and let it evaporate or pull the plug wires going to the plugs and let it all dryout for a few days!


i let it dry out and worked for me!!!


seems like 3.4L have a water problem!

As a correction to my post on the 3.4L there are no coils on the RH side of the motor, just the plug boot. The coils are all on the LH side

As a correction to my post on the 3.4L there are no coils on the RH side of the motor, just the plug boot. The coils are all on the LH side. No reason to wait on things drying out. Either cover them or just pull the boots and use the stuff I recommended to dry them if wet. IMHO.
