Entune and iPhone X sluggish interface

I have a 2015 Limited 4Runner with the JBL premium package. I recently got an iPhone X with iOS 11.2 and now when I listen to music there is a delay anywhere between 3-5 seconds when trying to do things like change songs through the head unit. Doesn't matter if I'm connected via USB or bluetooth. When I control audio by skipping songs on the phone there is no delay. Im assuming that the head unit is having problems keeping up with data or actions sent from the phone. This sluggish performance is very annoying and I was wondering if anyone has experienced compatibility issues or poor performance with the iPhone X or with a specific iOS version and if there is any solution?

Yes I have and figured it was just me. Ive noticed it’s intermittent though.

Yes it is intermittent which is whats throwing me off. I have figured out that when the iPhone screen is "awake" on the lock screen the Toyota head unit is very responsive (I hope that makes sense). When the phone is just laying on the passenger seat and the screen is black the head unit is not responsive at all.
 
Having the same issues here with our 2014. Going to do the latest entune update (released in March, not expecting much) and see if that helps. I think I’ve come to the end of the road with me and entune. Those Pioneer and Kenwood systems are looking better everyday.

I just installed and tested the March update. Same sluggish performance with the audio interface. Ive always had a pioneer head unit but thought in a 40k car I wouldn't need one. Looks like I might be going down that road also.

They're going to lose customers over this if they stay dug in. Myself probably included. I broke down and got a daily driver because I was tired of waiting for a 4R refresh - The new car has Car Play and every time I take the 4R out I am reminded of how absolutely awful Entune is. My plan was to trade the old 4R in for a new one (if/when they release a 6th Gen with real updates) and give the DD to my Fiance but there is no way I am going to spend 5 minutes battling with a brand new $40K+ truck just to play a podcast while on the way to work.

Many of the new Toyotas (fortunately the 4Runner is actually 7+ years old) have ditched factory nav for the "Scout GPS" app. Go look up the reviews on both the apple and android app stores. As a fun bonus: It is apparently completely non-functional with the latest iOS patch. That means your brand new car has no navigation at all unless you get a windshield stalk and just run Google/Apple Maps off your phone.

Me too. I am actually interested in the Toyota Land Cruiser once my minivan runs down. However, no CarPlay is a HUGE deal for me. And it looks like Toyota/Lexus is firm on not having CarPlay or Android Auto.

On the other side of the fence, Acura/Honda and other OEMs are embracing CarPlay/Android Auto with open arms.
 
I don’t think I would necessarily let the infotainment options sway me on a vehicle. The rest of the 4runner, and Toyota line for that matter, is pretty solid and reliable. You can always upgrade the nav system to something that works and sounds better. One of my co-workers has a new fully loaded Ford Explorer. Nice vehicle with all kinds of bells and whistles and a nice sound system but the thing is always in the shop for some reason. I’d rather have it the other way, reliable transportation that just needs an audio upgrade.

My former f150 with the SYNC system was actually probably worse than entune if that makes anyone feel any better. I actually had to delete my phone from it and delete that system from my phone so it would stop dialing random people on my contacts. Fun thing was, the music wouldn’t stop playing and there was no ring tone so you never knew when you were Live belting out your favorite song. From the feedback I got, I’m not a very good singer.

Well, for me, i use the NAVI often and i play music in the car. So, CarPlay is a very useful and important thing to have in the future vehicle...for me.

Aftermarket solutions are rarely good IMHO. You need to spend $$$$ on a good installer because the aftermarket solution requires lots of re-wiring and more hardware...only to find that it looks like shit and has missing features.

Look at this Alpine: Review: Alpine's iLX-107 is the first, and best, aftermarket wireless CarPlay receiver

Hardly an easy install and then you have to deal with antennas and wiring to rear view camera, etc..

As for other brands, SYNC now is very good...easily one of the top infotainment system i believe.

For me, since i don’t off-road anymore, Acura/Honda products are very enticing. And if i do off-road again, then yeah, Toyota is up there...but where do i spend more time? On-road. What do i use often? My radio and NAVI.

Like you I also always have music playing wherever I’m at and I do use the Navi, at least when I go out of town. I also like CarPlay, I do agree it should be standard.

However, our differences are that I think aftermarket headunits are great. They offer better sound, looks, ease of use, and upgrade ability. I also don’t fret the install because I install it myself. I like wiring and working with electrical systems so it’s actually fun to me. As for the overall look, you just have to find the right dash kit, they’re not all equal.

The thing that really burns it for me is that I expect/demand that the infotainment in a brand new truck be at least functional. Reviews of the 2018 Toyotas with the brand new Entune systems are very discouraging - Nav that is a complete pain to use and requires frequent phone restarts to synch (does not work at all with the latest iOS) and music interfaces that flat out don't work.

If you enjoy upgrading the head-unit and stereo then more power to you. I just feel that it should be something you do because you want to, not because you have to in order to get basic functionality.
