error codes

i tried searching, but didn't come up with much but here's my question:
i know there's a way to check the error codes using a paper clip in the engine bay.
can someone point me in the right direction on how to do this?

Just a hint for future posts. Let us know what vehicle you have, what engine is in it, and what year it is. It makes it easier for people to give you accurate answers.

That being said, I know you can do it for pre-1996 vehicles. Vehicles after 1996 are OBDII vehicles. I have not come across a method to do my 2002 4Runner, but maybe somebody else knows of one.

Easiest method is to go buy yourself a code reader, or get the code pulled by a local shop (some places do it for free.)

sorry, im used to posting in car specific forums, because this is actually for my dad's car.

the vehicle is a 96 4runner sr5.

i was thinking about going out and buying a code reader, but i'm just looking for an alternative to spending about 100 bucks.

NO, No pin won't work(pre OBD II) like some one else said go to autozone and they will pull the code for free.....could be something as simple as a bad gas cap.

thanks guys, i just sucked it up and bought a scanner from pep boys, ran me back about 2 bills, because i bought the one for obd I & II, just in case my friend needed it.
