error on cd player

I am new here, so please don't kill me if this has been asked already. i have a 2003 4runner w/jbl 6 disc receiver/changer. I got an error message on it the other day and it won't go away. I think its error2 (its either 1 0r 2), but can't remember..took it to the dealership and they said I need a new HU, but wanted to make sure that's the case, or if I can fix it myself. BTW, I tried a lense cleaning disc already and it didn't work.
Next question..If I do need a new HU, which units are plug and play (either factory or aftermarket)? Thanks for the help.

I thought there was a way to clear the error? maybe this bump will get someone to see this and help you.

I put a Scion HU in my MR2 Spyder and there was alot of talk about Error codes and clearing them. I never had trouble with mine.

I found this thread where they talk about soem errors on the jbl 6cd player. Don't take me worng, but click on the SEARCH button above and type "player error" and it will return some finds.

Error 3 usually means a mechanical problem with the laser.... whereas I believe Error 1 is the laser is dirty. If you have already tried cleaning the laser, I recommend that you open up the headunit and take a look inside.


I had an Error 3 occur on a 2006 JBL unit that I was using to replace my 2005 JBL unit. The error occured because the laser arm was stuck in its dock position. It was easy to fix by popping the top off of the headunit, plugging the headunit back into the vehicle, and giving the laser arm a little push.

Error 1 may very well be a stuck CD. CD's have a tendancy to jump "tracks" or "slots" in this type of CD changer. Once again, this problem is easy to fix if you pop the top off of the unit and (with no power going to the unit) pull the discs out manually (and CAREFULLY!! ... be slow and deliberate!).

And --- if you need help on getting the headunit out of the car --- go to this link : http://www.castulucci.com/projects/carpc/oemnaviaccess/ If you follow these instruction, you can have the headunit out in as little as 10 minutes. It is very easy to get out.

thanks for all of the replies guys..this forum is awesome. i checked today and it is error 1..i guess I will be pulling this bitch out tonight to see what I've got...if I need to replace it, is there anyway to put a basic eclipse hu in it without rewiring and all of that crap? thanks again

Well, I'm experiencing the ERROR 3 as well on an '03 JBL. I've gotten the radio out and cover off. My changer displays no trouble at all.... discs load and eject without a problem. I can even watch the disc(s) move in and out of their channel, and the spindle will reach out, grab the disc and attach itself to the disc... but the motor will NOT spin the CD. I don't hear any motors even trying to move, no grinding... clicking... nothing.

Dealership, before I knew what was causing my ERROR 3, said they can have it sent out for repair, which could cost around $300. Yikes- just for repair of a 4yr old radio. Purchasing a non-EOM unit appears to make me lose my center speaker and 2 far rear corners as well.

If I'm going to shell out $300.... how much is a new '05 or '06 headunit while I'm at it?

I've been searching and have seen a lot of laser arm jams, CD's stuck, but have found nothing on a CD that won't spin (while appearing to have nothing in it's way, etc.

Go on ebay and buy one. I got my 2006 JBL unit for $225 I think ... and that was when they first came out. You can probably find an '05 for around $150 or so ....

I'll check that out. Will an '06 fit an '03 ? It looks like it would from the thread posted in this area. Except for the little gap at the bottom. I just want to make sure the harnesses plug in.
