Ever wondered what happened to the clunkers after you traded them in?

Cash for Clunkers. Everyone's been buzzing. My dealership sold 120 cars under the government's CARS program. But have you ever wondered what happens to the cars after you trade them in for your $4500 allowance?

Well, of course the government takes them from the dealership and crushes them and melts them down and recycles them into new sheet metal. But what happens between that time.....














Well, here...at my dealership we had a demolition derby with them.
I picked a Windstar, because I thought I'd be safe from most attacks. That was, until I was broadsided....and....umm...rolled...

i think a requirement for the government to take them is that they not be running, which is the reason for that

Yeah, I knew the reason for it....just seems like these cars could have been put to better use than that...

At least you guys got more use out of the clunkers than just dumping clunker bombs in the engine.

Did you happen to get any of that on video? That would be a blast to watch. Takes me back to when I was in high school I worked for my girlfriend's brother who owned a used car dealership, body shop, and a junk yard. I floated around working at all of them. Sometimes a car or truck would get traded in that still ran but the body was trash or had no value. So we would hold some demo derbys but mostly I liked the closed course rally racing we would do on the 14 acre site. I still remember coming really close to getting hurt when I ramped a ford taurus about 8ft in the air then slamming into a junked car and having the airbag knock the air out of me. Too bad we were all to poor to have cameras back then.

Unfortunately I was too excited about actually being able to ram other cars that I completely forgot to set up a camera or two =/

if we do it again (which I don't think will happen cause the sales office FLIPPED when they saw that we had flipped, litterally) I will set up at least one outside cam and one inside the car!

They also put some clunkers in a local junk yard by my house, couple of 4Runners are there too. And they cant sell any part of the engine.
