Well... finally got myself a Toyota 4x4 late this summer when I got my 99 4Runner SR5.. only got to enjoy it for a few months.

Early yesterday morning some "darwin award candidates" stole our 4Runner.. and proceeded to wreck it by rolling it over on the highway. Got the phone call from the mounties at 5:40am yesterday. CRAAAAP!!!

Anyways.. at least they got the idiots. They had to be taken to the hospital and are in police custody because this isn't their first offense.

So ... the silver lining part.. it's written off so hopefully the insurance company will give us the replacement cost and we can find ourselves another one.

I guess I can get one with that rear locker that I missed out on the first time! One question though.. can you get the Limited's WITHOUT those horrendous fender flares?!?! (Personal taste... I know some like them).

No, all limiteds came with the larger color-matched flares. Behind the flares there are holes in the fenders and doors used for mounting the flares/cladding, so removing them isn't all that simple either.

I'm not sure what your plans are for your 4Runner but you may search the 3rd gen. gallery for some Limiteds. When I first got my Limited I hated the flares too. But when I saw some Limiteds that are lifted with a 285 series tire that fills out the flares a little more I think they really add an aggressive look to the 4Runner. Obviously if you are not planning to go this route then I would definately look for an SR5 with the black fender flares.
 
I kinda want someone to steal mine or wreck it, so I can get a 4x4 instead of my 2wd with the insurance :D hahahaha i would be upset but like "YEAHHHHHHHHHH"
 
On the way home from a fender bender with a wide load, I was all smiles. I got $1,100 from his insurance and got a TJM-15 w/money left over to put towards a lift.
 
First of all, if your insurance companies are anything like the ones in the US, you will have to fight them to get a fair price. Print out some classified ads of 4Runners that closely resemble the specs of yours. Hope that works out okay for you.

The 99+ Limiteds are good vehicles. The flares, I do not mind, but the two-tone, I hate. So I'd get them painted to match the rest of the rig. Or, you can opt for the Highlander Edition (sport edition--has hood scoop). However, the thing I like about the Limited is that they came with a multi-mode 4WD system, which allows you to put it in 4WD on dry pavement (basically an AWD system). But I do hate the leather seats...

Already have some classified ads printed out.. 4Runners are being sold here for quite a bit more than the "book value".. sometimes ALOT more. I do have my Bill of Sale that shows how much I paid for it.. just a few months ago. Hopefully that will help as well.

My other question.. is the rear locker ONLY an option on the Limiteds? Or did it come as an option on the 2000 SR5's as well? The descriptions confuse me:

99 - Off-road enthusiasts will find improved low-traction performance available through a locking rear differential, optional on all four-wheel drive models (except SR5 models equipped with automatic transmission). The site's info is a little incorrect and a bit confusing.

The diff lock is available coupled with either an auto or 5 speed tranny.

All 4Runners had a rear diff lock option from '96-'00 excluding the 4 cylinder models and maybe varied year to year and might have had to added within a package add-on.

hahahaha!!!! thats my secret too!!!! i mean i love my rig, but i kinda want someone to rear end me so i can use the money to lift it, get the tires i want, the rims i want, the in dash camry nav unit, a brush guard, light bar, and led tail lights! hahaha. guess i wasnt the only one out there to think that. hahaha
