Everyone with a plate bumper, post pics here!

My 99 with 4x4 Innovations front and rear plate. Coated with Monstaliner "pyroplastic", still gotta mount the rear this week if I have time. Then put lights and D-ring N stuff.

Powder Coat bumper $$$

So what is a decent price for powder coating an after market bumper? My first guy told me $90. for my Savage Rear Hybrid but then he realized it would not fit in his oven. The next guy i called wants $275. (over the phone, still needs to see it). I was expecting $150. so needless to say it's a bit of sticker shock. At $275. that's almost 40% the cost of the bumper!

I'm sure if you've already decided that you want to powder them then it will be hard to sway your opinion any other way, but, have you considered bed lining them in lieu of powder? I considered powder for mine but chose not to based on not only the cost, but should I ever rack my bumper against something, touch ups will be a breeze in comparison. Once that powder chips, you're looking at pulling the bumper back off and going for repairs.

I too wouldn't powder coat. I had my rear bumper powder coated with sand blasting for around $160. After 2 years it is already showing spots of corrosion. I had my front bumper galvanized for only $120. It will never rust. I then just painted it myself. Very impressed with how well it turned out.

I just got my front and rear AOR bumpers blasted, zinc primer and powder coat for $290. I had checked a few other places and they were $450 and up cost wise.

I would do it for $160, but I'm wayyy down in So Cal

I did the same to my AOR and that zinc primer layer should make it rust proof in the event of a chip in top coat.

Rysandro . I ended up at $250... But it looks great and what can you do. Kind of had to go with the market price up here I guess.

@TMP . Looking good man. You are sporting my favorite front bumper! It's so unfortunate AO won't mod that for a BL. I still may go with theirs though and just live with the gap. I am still on the fence about it though... Saving my lunch money still so time to decide...

Hey Keith, how has the Monstaliner held up on your bumpers?

I have a pair of 4x Innovation bumpers that have been sitting in the garage all winter awaiting temperatures warm enough to finish. I’m planning on two coats of Chassis Saver on all surfaces inside and out, and two coats of Monstaliner on the exterior surfaces.

My 2000 SR5 is natural white/silver (K82) and I’m leaning toward using the silver-gray Chassis Saver and Light Quartz Gray Monstaliner to compliment the silver fender flares. I considered powdercoating, but the winters here tend to destroy even pricey powdercoated finishes in a couple of years.

I’d like to hear your (and others’) opinions on my choices.

Thanks!

They've been ok considering my usage. I drive a lot of highway miles, so small stones hit it at 80 mph from dump trucks and other trucks. Few chips and places I need to touch up on the front bumper. The rear got wacked by a few things and that needs to be touched up too, but overall good as can be expected. Surface for Monstaliner needs to be scuffed up really good for bond. Chassis Saver really needs to be scuffed up on surface for bond. Both are really hard paints and really finicky on bond. If not a good bond, they can come off in large chips or flakes when hit by something. I went over primer and Rustoleum and scuffed it up good. If you don't you'll have bond issues.
The light buckets, I couldn't get Monstaliner in there proper so it was just Rustoleum over primer. In the light buckets I'd put a small amount of paint bondable caulk, cause there's a small gap there, light buckets are tacked on (at least mine are, not a full fill bead. Hard to spray in gap. When I touch mine up, I'll address this. Here's a couple pics of the light bucket rust bleed out. I rolled my Monstaliner on.
Because of the color you want, if you can, consider a hot galv dip. That would hold up nice, and galvanized will hold up really better than anything and the color is nice with a silver accent truck. I think sleepydad was one guy that did it.

hot dipping is a pain to source but it's not expensive. I did mine back in 2017.

It has weathered a bit but it has zero rust on either the front or back bumper. it was very shiny when I first got it done and it's dull now.

I think this was right when I got it back from the dipping guy

these are hi-res so you can click and zoom pretty good on these images.

you can see here as time as gone on it has dulled down quite a bit
<a href="https://imgur.com/uoHLXgZ"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/uoHLXgZl.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

it's now on my winter truck so it's getting salt belt punishment and it's holding up just fine.

a couple of things to know about dipping

1. you need to drill holes in any sealed area, like enclosed tubes. the steel can explode if you have sealed areas because of the heat and pressure changes when you dip something. not a big deal just be aware of that.

2. you can't weld on it after you dip it. in truth you can weld onto galvanized surfaces but you need to have special equipment to protect yourself from the nasty fumes. can kill you if you don't use PPE.

other than that it's a nice setup and I'm happy I did it. again not showroom appearance but for me it's about the utility of it. it's also a really tough finish and takes a beating.

Looking good. I like the rugged weathered zinc flat finish over the shiny new stuff. My D rings are that way. If I can find a local way to hot dip some future stuff, I'll do it. I'm all for rust prevention and low maintenance.

sleepydad - Thank you for the tip on hot dipping. I sourced a business in Milwaukee (half hour away, so close enough) that will do both bumpers for $150. I do like the weathered color and, if I choose to coat with bedliner, I can always do that later.

I will have to drill 12 vent holes, but that's no big deal. I don't think I could purchase the Chassis Saver and Monstaliner materials and other incidentals for the cost of galvanizing.

Thanks again!

cool, post some pics when you get it back. I have been thinking about doing the bed liner thing on mine. any textured finish would work great I think.
