Exhaust Issues

I have a 1998 V6 Runner and what I think is the original exhaust system/muffler on the truck.
It seems to have gotten a hole and a rattle in the last week or so and I am going to take it in to have it looked at/replaced.

1. I am new to the shops in the area and I was wondering what I should expect to pay for a job like this, assuming its just the muffler that needs to be replaced? What if its the whole exhaust?

2. It seems like my gas mileage is considerably worse since this problem occured, is that a normal side effect?

3. If I need a whole new exhaust system should I go with the original equipment or something that would be an upgrade? I am not looking for loud exhaust, actually the quieter the better. Thanks.

I had mine cut out and put in a Dynomax super turbo installed. It was a little over 100 dollars. That was about 5 years ago. It was slightly louder than stock but when you go down the road you dont even hear it. Chances are something broke lose and could be restricting flow. You shouldnt have to replace the tail pipe because it should all be stainless. Anything you put on beside the stock is probably going to flow better and also be cheaper than a factory one.

I went to the closest shop (Monroe) this morning, and the guy said I needed to replace the muffler section and the tail pipe section, + labor the total quote was $795, ha. I went to a shop that I have had work done at before and they said just the muffler needed to be replaced and that the replacement for the current muffler was $395 just for the muffler then about an hours labor. I went out to take a look with the mechanic and he said he could prob fit an aftermarket muffler into the set up foa about 150-200 bucks total.
Thats the option I am going with.

I do agree with you about dynomax brand... actually i purchase one for my expedition and all i can say is i really love the roaring sound of it at high rev. i say at there store that they will have a Dynomax Rebate im just curious about it.
