Does anybody know what the most practical exhaust is for a 98 4runner? I'm looking for something to increase my mpgs and I have seen Borla and Magnaflow mostly and I am leaning towards the magnaflow but I'm not sure which one to get and where to find the best deal. Please reply. I need help.

You could also look at Flowmaster and CherryBomb.
Strange. I've done a fair amount of research both company side and consumer and all point to an increase in mpgs whether it be big or only slight its still noticable. I talked to a guy in 4Wheel Parts (national off-road store) and he said that it should increase my mpgs and it did so for him. We'll just have to wait and see. I think I might just end up making it custom and just running a dual off one muffler or getting one of those cross overs. I just don't know where the best place to get the stuff is.

I had my muffler installed about a month ago and it has pretty much done nothing as far as MPG, or at least that I can tell.

Are you just replacing the muffler or the whole exhaust? If you just replace the muffler you may see gain some MPG but I doubt that it will even be noticeable to you. Some will tell you that they have gained MPG but I seriously doubt you will see much. I could see you gaining 1-2 MPG however if you replaced the mufffler, and had all the tubing re-done with mandrel bends and maybe 1/4" or 1/2" bigger.
I've got a relative who is a mechanic so I'm going to get him to help me bend the tubing and such so I can get a bigger flow rate etc. I guess I'll go with the flowmaster. Please excuse my ignorance but what is a madrel bend? I like your setup trd_. Mine is very similar to yours without the rims but much of the custom dents...ha.
So now I'm stuck between mufflers. I'm just going to chop the tubing off right behind the cat. and then attach the muffler right behind and then use the last 1.5 feet of existing tubing and go out the side underneath the back passenger door and do dual tips. I think it will look tight just a little worried about burning people. Now I'm stuck though between the Flowmaster Series 40 and the Flowtech Raptor...Which one? I want something a good sound to it just not raspy which is what the flowmaster appearently sounds like.

get a roof rack and you will see that extra MPG vanish
my advice is if you don't want loud dont get flowmaster, if you want some noise but nothing to much, i'd get the magnaflow.

Also, have you listened to mufflers at all on 4Runners? IMO the flowmaster doesn't sound great on the 4Runner and their technology is actually outdated. I think the magnaflows have a much better sound but again this is only my opinion.

When you guys post MPG numbers remember to throw in the facts like 2wd,highway or city since just throwing numbers out there tends to confuse others into thinking they may be having issues or thinking they will get the same gains.
30 more miles a tank is realistic but if it's all city driving that gain might not be as prevalant.
My mom see about 320 miles a tank with all highway and she's 4wd but city driving she gets about maybe 280 and with an exhaust upgrade I doubt she's going to see too many more miles to those numbers but it might be a little gain.
Real world numbers with 4wd 3rd gens (even with intake and exhaust mods) are 16-19 in the city and 22-23 on the highway.
Some will see more but it's usually with given special circumstances as seeing almost all flat ground or benefiting from a tailwind,etc.

The armor that I have on the car is actually lower than where the exhaust will exit so that is not an issue because if the sys. gets scrapped off where it will be, then it would have happened in the back to. As for the legality...I'll ask around. The side exit was my uncle's (who is a professional and award winning mechanic) idea so I see little reason why he wouldn't be aware of the law. As for dual exhaust hampering mpgs because of weight...I'm not so sure. Everything I've encountered points to a higher horsepower because of the flow physics behind them. Why would high performance sports cars like audis be equipped with them if they hampered the car?
