Hi guys, I have a 2005 Sport V6 with about 66,000 miles on it and within the last week I have been getting a rattle in my exhaust at low rpm's. When I rev the engine slighty the sound goes away, but returns at idle. I took a quick look under the car to make sure none of the heat shields are loose, but when I shake the muffler slightly (with the engine off) I can hear something rattling inside of it like something is loose. Any idea what this might be??

Usually, there's not much to go wrong with a muffler or even a resonator. The catalytic converter material could break apart and I've only seen one (practically) explode and start spitting material out the back.
Try tapping on the heat shielding some more and definitely eliminate it as a possibility before moving up to the larger exhaust items.

The same thing happened to mine a month ago and it was a bad catalytic conveter. The converter had broken apart and was making a rattling noise at idle.
I will have to take another look and inspect the converter too. I believe from what I read in the warranty manual last night the converter is covered under the 8/80 which is eight years or 80,000 miles whichever comes first.

Yep mine was under warranty just take a trip to the dealership and have them look at it.

I think the problem I am having is in a diffferent area other than the catalytic converter which is not covered by the 8/80 warranty. Catalytic converter falls under the 8/80, but the center pipe assembly which I highlighted in yellow on the attached file is not covered and will have to be replaced out of pocket. One dealership quoted me a price of $412 for the center piece part itself. Gaskets will add additional $$ to the amount. Labor is another $180 if they do the install.
Visually everything is fully intact. Nothing is falling apart due to rust or anything so I am just bothered by the way this happened out of the blue. The car runs quiet just like normal. Not loud like a muffler going bad. Just that annoying rattle at idle. If anyone else my have experienced something similar in the past please share your comments or experience. Thanks.
Not yet. I suspect it might be the gasket at the section where the center piece and the rear piece is bolted together. I am just guessing, but based on the exact location where the noise is coming from I can't think of anything else. When I have a chance I will unbolt that section and take a quick look. I might need some new bolts too since the current ones are a bit corroded. I will keep you updated.
Update. Here is what I found a few days ago while attempting to get to the bottom of this noise. The area circled in red is slightly cracked, but not completely separated. Everything sounds normal. The crack is just enough to cause a ratttle when the exhaust vibrates. I used some cold weld epoxy (JB Weld) and it's fine again. Just as good as a welding torch I guess. Going to replace the center piece when I have time.

Well this is the end result of the exhaust. I guess The cracked section was too corroded to hold itself together for long so it finally broke off. I removed the rear piece and had a very hard time getting the broken piece separated from the good rear piece due to the corrosion. With a little patience, a dremel and a saw it finally came off. So I will replace the center piece, gaskets and bolts and should be good as new again. I attached some pics. Sorry for the quality. I took them with my phone instead of my regular camera.

Installed new exhaust center portion earlier this week. The job was pretty easy and straightforward. Only part that sucks is that I started late in the evening and did not finish until after midnight and had to get up early to go to work the next morning. Everything is working great again. Here are some pictures...

I'm having the same issue. I just bought my used 08 T4R in July and it was located in Buffalo its entire life. I live in Wisconsin so pretty much the same climate. I hear this annoying paddle every time I back up in the garage. I heat shield of the cat already came off. I this the cat is the issue, but it might be more after reading your post. Thanks for the time I'll add to this when I get to the bottom of the raddle.
