Exhaust rip off? Need advice

Hey guys,
I took my 86 runner to a local shop that is very well known for its work on Toyota Trucks. We agreed on a price of $500 for a used manifold, pipes, resonator instead of a cat, and a muffler. Seemed a little steep but I thought he was a good guy and I've taken my truck there a few other times. I told him I wanted a quiet exhaust - not really looking for performance - just quiet and I didn't want to be breathing in fumes. So I drive it home - louder than expected and barely quieter than the busted and rusted one before. I look under the truck and see only a straight pipe to what appears to be a crummy made in shop muffler. I thought the manifold was the same one but upon second look I think it might be different. This used manifold he quoted me at $150. (RockAuto has them for around 80 give or take 20 - as well as tons of other online stores.) Do I go back and ask him to put the resonator on? Is it possible that I misunderstood him when he said resonator but maybe meant muffler (I know they're somewhat similar) instead. I thought a resonator is almost like a "pre-muffler" if you will. Will a resonator even make a difference? It sounds really ricey right now and can't stand it, plus, I paid $500 for a used manifold (if its not the same one) a straight pipe, and a crummy muffler. So I go back and have them put one on, or should I take it to another shop and then find another shop?

Why did it need a new manifold? He didnt even put the heatshield on. But judging by the crispy looking wires that run above it, its been missing for a while.

Muffler looks ok, looks like a knock off flowmaster 40 or something. What size piping is that?

Yes a resonator or a cat will make is quieter. So will running the tail all the way out the back rather than having it dump under the bed.

The exhaust dumping out underneath the vehicle like that is dangerous!!! The exhaust fumes need to be routed out the back or side(preferably). This guy should know better. Carbon monoxide can get into the passenger compartment and kill u !!! Take it back immediately and have him fix it. Drive with all the windows down! GL

Quatre definitely appreciate your concern. I've been driving it for the past year with about 20+ holes/leaks.

Hyde, I suspected a crack in the manifold. He said there wasn't but the original one broke on disassembly. Crispy wire has been there since I bought it. The muffler is really high pitch and I'm not sure what brand it is. I know he was fed up with the truck, as he had a bear of a time getting the studs out. Since we talked about putting a resonator on and there isn't one, I feel I should bring it to his attention.

The guy is totally knowledgable. He works on nothing but toyotas and has 5 stars on Yelp with TONS of reviews. Whether they're legit or not I don't know.

I'd go back and rip him a new one. That is a poor excuse for an exhaust system. I'm not sure how the laws are in Fl. but I believe most states a cat is necessary. You can pick up a universal high flow at advance for like $70. That mufflers appears to be a flowmaster knockoff by Thrush. I've had a few of those and they have done me well for 1/2 the cost of a true Flowmaster. I believe the last one I picked up was $39. So with a new muffler and a "new" manifold you should of been looking at a max $130ish in parts. So $370ish in pipe and labor?? If it was mandrel bent stainless the full length of the truck then maybe but not for a bunch of crappy welded pre bent priced up stuff. And do I actually see a hose clamp somewhere in there??? Just my $0.02 but I'd be pissed. Oh and it's also illegal in many states to dump the exhaust under the cabin. On a pickup it's fine to dump just behind the axles but no safety inspection will pass it under an SUV like that. Very dangerous.
