Exhaust Smell Question

OK, I tried doing a quick search and I didn't find anything definitive so if this has been asked before please point me in the right direction.

I am in the process of redoing...ish. my interior. An impromptu short in my brake lights has given me the opportunity to gut the interior out of my truck. I am slowly getting it back together and right now I have most of the dash in and center console. The shift area for the console had nothing there but some scrap carpet shoved in there. The PO did a 3" body lift on it and the shift boot is nowhere to be seen. So I got creative and I cut up an old rubber floor mat and RTV silicone it down to that area and almost have that area sealed off. There are just small gaps when shifting and I have a rubber gasket over it to keep any splash out. However now it is too hot to drive with the windows up and the AC is not fixed yet. Doing the old 5@55 A/C I get a ton of exhaust smell in the truck. Like burning the throat bad.

I have an oil leak on the back of the motor, pretty sure it is the cam gaskets but I am not going to go thru that mess right now. What I am smelling is definitely a mixture of exhaust and burnt oil. It just seems like a lot. Would it have anything to do with driving with the back window down? It just seems like an awful lot when going down the road. Like it is just dumping in the cab.

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

5@55 nice... I had a problem like that before but on a different car. It was on a Honda civic and the oil was dripping onto the hot exhaust pipe underneath. with the windows open you could smell it but when moving couldn't see any smoke. Check to see if oil is dripping on the cross over exhaust manifold (unless you have headers), or run it at idle after driving to see if smoke comes out from the hood. This is all of course if no smoke is coming out of the tailpipe.

She don't smoke at a stand still and nothing out of the pipe. She doesn't burn any oil. I think it drips going down the road because I can only smell it when moving.

I figured as much. I didn't think about it until I started typing this.

Yup Im gonna agree on the back window. Mines doesnt smoke or anything and I still smell exhaust fumes when driving down the road with the back window down. I have also confirmed that the air gets sucked back into the cab, I used to hang a pirate flag from my CB antennae right near the back windsheild. With the window down, the flag would get sucked back into the cab. I found that if I popped the sunroof completely off, and opened the rear of the vent windows and both front windows down the exhaust smell and wind blowback is very minimal. Id say just run with the top off though personally.

I get the same smell in mine with the back window down but only when I'm out of the gas, even with the front windows down.

Just want to report back to you guys that the rear window was the issue. All is good now. Thanks for the help.
