It appears that I need a new muffler on my 2004 V6 4 Runner . What type of muffler should I replace it with to give it a throaty sound and what is the small muffler looking thing in the exhaust system back by the rear bumper and do I need this ?

What I would really like to do is eliminate the rear tail pipe and have the exhaust pipe exit the muffler and then curve out the side of the vehicle just in front of the rear tire . Think this is Possible or would it effect performance in a negative way ?

You'll be just fine with your idea. If you dont plan on changing the diameter of the piping do as you please basically..lol...Whatever you do dont to the y-pipe. I just recently redid my exhaust and after shopping all the name brands i got the best deal on a magnaflow muffler. Get a nice 18inor so and call it a day. leave the resonator.

Now when you say leave the resonator are you referring to the small muffler looking thing at the rear of the exhaust system ? If so I couldn't have a short pipe after the muffler extending out the side in front of the rear tire ?

The resonator is the football shaped thing towards the end. I recently had my exhaust turned and routed out the side, behind the rear tire, and had the shop cut out the resonator. I still have the stock muffler and haven't noticed much of a change in sound with the resonator gone.

Well my muffler and resonator (my resonator looks like a smaller muffler not shaped like a football) both have holes in them so whatever way I go I would like to have only a muffler , no resonator as long as it doesn't effect performance or mileage . If the exhaust tone is throatier sounding I'm OK with that also .

I heard a magnaflow on blk-4runner, it was quiet to me, i have a flowmaster super 44 and its louder than his setup, we both have the v6. He had the magnaflow catback and i have custom 3 inch pipping from the flange of the cat.

Today I had a stock muffler and pipe installed without a resonator and had the pipe angled out just below the rear quarter panel . Sounds a little mellower I think than it would have sounded with the resonator .
