Existing accessory accomodations

As most of you know, newer vehicles may differ in their accessories but typically not in their wiring. I take great joy in finding the harness or plug that was to be used for an accessory I didn't buy/wasn't available and then installing my own accessory using their wiring.

Ex: Did you know that the 4.7l has a hole/bolt right next to the coolant temp sender? Forget drilling and tapping, you can toss the bolt, stick your aftermarket sender into the hole and continue wiring (for a gauge).

My 2004 Sport doesn't have a engine compartment light. I think I've found an unused connector just to the right of the bottom hood latch that I may be able to use to turn an installed light on and off.

The center console has about 2-3 unused connectors that can be brought in to play.

Yes, you are right. This is happening because for different markets Toyota offers different equipment. And just imagine how many wiring harness they should make for each version. So they use some sort of universal, which allows them to connect different equipment for different markets. We also have some points of it, because we can connect some of our electric mods to unused connectors.

I, too, have a 2004 Sport and have noticed a number of unused connectors. The one on the left side of the engine is for the theft-deterrent alarm. Those in the center console for the lighted ashtray and suspension control switches, I believe. There are 2 behind the lower dash on the left of the steering column which are for the 115V inverter and the traction button.

Here is where I could use some help. The other day, I found one connector and have no clue what it is for. I have looked through the schematics and part locations and couldn't find anything for it. It is a black, 2-pin female connecter located right behind the passenger light. I believe it is bundled and tuck away with the wiring that goes to the passenger fog and DRL. If anyone has any information on this one, feel free to speak up.

What passenger light? Overhead or in the door? Where and what is the passenger fog and DRL?

Has anyone figured out how to use the plug forward of the radiator that would normally be for theft prevention (forced hood opening) for a engine compartment lamp?

Sorry, I should have been a little clearer. Refer to Alexjet's photo and look immediately behind this lens. Follow the two wires to a small bundle about a foot back and there you should find another short section of wire that terminates into a 2 pin connector.

Power Outlet

OK, you guys are great. So I figure in the limited 05 there is a power outlet in rear console box.
I have a sport and do not. With all the gadgets phone, ipod, GPS. The one plug by the shifter just doesn't cut it. And that one is a just plain in a bad spot. I would love to add one either in the console box and or another in the front.

I just can't see plugging in one of those multiplier outlets. It's bad enough with one plug sticking out let alone crowding that space with 3 or 4.

Any ideas.

Regarding the 115v plug have you traced it out? Does it go to the left rear fender area or the center console, or both?

I would love to add one either in the console box and or another in the front.

Buy the cigarette lighter kid fm Toyota and you get the lighter hole and the 12V acc hole. If you want more than that, it's easy wiring to stick one in the side of the console or in the void under the armrest.

I ran an unswitched hot wire fm the battery through the firewall to power the lighter/acc when I didn't have the switch on. I'll also use this when I hardwire the GPS &CB. I used the switched wires for my gauge power and lighting.

I want to put it in the stock location. In the rear left fender well. That is why I was asking if it was already prewired saving a lot of time for the install. Has anyone traced out the plug left front lower dash for the 115v system, does it go to the left rear fender area, and/or center console?

12V or 115V

First, it seems that you guys are combining 2 topics into this one thread. What are you guys looking for, 12 VDC or 115 VAC? The ashtray mod will remove the one 12 VDC outlet and replace it with a single 12 VDC outlet and a cagarette outlet (which could be used as another 12 VDC outlet).

If you're looking for a 115 V outlet, you will need to purchase a number of things, which is rumored to be very high. The wiring should all be there. I know for a fact the the switch wiring behind the dash is there and the wiring to the center console is there (for the outlet), but have not actually traced out the wiring to where the inverter is housed (inside the rear panel on the driver's side). Rando does a super job in explaining how to access the power inverter <a href="http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2799" > here </a> so you may want to try it out and see what you have. You would be looking for a connector with the following wires: purple w/ white (from AC115 INV relay), red w/ white (to AC outlet), green (to AC outlet) and white w/ black (ground).

If you want it to be stock, then you would need to purchase the switch, relay, outlet and the inverter, which is going to be high. Others have talked about putting in there own inverter, but you have as couple things to consider. The wire is only designed to carry so much current, therefore, you probably couldn't go any higher than the 100W inverter that Toyota uses. Second, there is very little airflow behind that panel, so heat may become an issue. There are a number of other threads talking about this same idea, so just browse through <a href'="http://www.toyota-4runner.org/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=394933&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending"> threads. </a>

Overall it would be nice, but I couldn't justify the cost vs usage issue. If there are any other questions, feel free to throw them out there.

My solution will be to purchase the aftermarket inverter (on the way), route a 8 ga hot wire fm the battery, and run a laptop off of it. This won't draw too much and the inverter has a couple of fans.

What are the specs on the inverter that you purchased and where did you get it? If you were to use your own wiring, you could get away with a higher wattage inverter.

Just a couple notes that you may want to think about. Even if the inverter has fans, you may be just recycling all the hot air inside that panel, if that is where you plan to mount it. I would try to find a way to let it breath a little more. Now, remember that I didn't actually take the panel off, so it very well could have good ventilation already, but this is something that you should look into.

Also, if you are trying to make it as stock as possible, it may be worth looking into getting the stock 115V switch and relay. You could use the stock wiring for the relay to turn it off and on since the wiring is already there (and to prevent leaving it on all the time since that is a switched power source). If you do this, you would just need to rerun the wire for the power, which is probably not suitable for the additional power that will be supplied by the inverter.

It's just a 600w fm Harbor Freight. I'll look behind the console but it'll probably go on a plate under the seat. It has an on/off switch so no problem with the unswitched hot wire.

Doing all this because I want the 120VAC up forward not back aft.

Bob,

The stock setup has the inverter located in the rear panel of the driver's side, but the outlet is actually located in the center console (under the lid or center armrest). The wiring for this is what is already there.

I have used schematics (provided by Linhsy) from another thread that shows the circuit. It is from an 03, but is the same in my 04. You should be able to find them doing a search.

You want to make sure that the relay and the wires going to the inverter from the relay can handle the DC current and you want to make sure that the wires for the outlet (leaving the inverter) can handle the AC current. If you run your own wires, than this shouldn't be a problem as long as you use the proper gauge...
