There hasn't been a real Jeep made since 1983. The CJ-7 with it's automatic transmission began the downfall 5 or 6 years before that. Even my 78 CJ-5 had a POS Mexican made transmission in it that was lucky to go 30,000 miles before it self destructed.....

Never had any problems with either of my Cjs T150s nor heard of any complaints with the tf999. I have 300+ wheel hp on my 360 and they stood up fine before I went with the tf727. Why 1983? Since the 86s actually had dana44s.....

Unfortunately, the gooberment's mpg and safety restrictions will eventually mess it up for us too. Safety is no. 1 with mpg a close 2nd. All the mfg's are having to shave weight and anything else to meet the mpg restrictions while adding 2 more layers of bubble wrap for us "soft" americans. I don't think we (the 4runner community) are very far behind from going unibody and aluminum, if continuing at all.

The 70 series, while super sweet, will never happen here mostly for the two reasons above.

I don't mind going aluminum, kind of like it actually. One of the downfalls I do see with it though is it's prone to crack when under stress. Unlike steel which can flex a little before it cracks. If they can curb that, its a win-win. However, I'm not a unibody or IRS fan. Not for an SUV or truck. Maybe for cars and UTVs, sure.

Either way, I will go out on a limb and say that whatever Jeep does, will be overpriced, undertested, and rushed into production to have the public be the test dummies.

One things for sure if jeep had the 4Runner they would market the hell out of it's off road capability. IMO jeeps are mostly marketing especially the new "trail rated" Cherokee.
