They did mention in the interviews that if the entire 12K mile trip was as technically challenging as what they have had in Costa Rica they would have never made it. Some pretty gnarly stuff and drives home the point of whelin' with the "buddy-system" approach!

The whole rationale for AT tires vs MT tires in last episode was weak, and this week the AT tires looked bad. If anything, became a good commercial for MT tires. Made the 4 runners really struggle. Does the Taco have same tires, as it did much better?
Pretty sure it has the same but in the Episode 10 when they went across they said the truck was alot heavier so might have helped and it has the supercharger.

Agreed, 10 and 11 have been awesome. But it has been a good series as a whole so far. Really brings to light how difficult and sketchy it can be going from country to country in Central America.
I think that the argument for an AT tire is valid, BUT from looking at the Generals that they have, it seems like they are still much more street oriented AT's than dirt. Something like an ST MAXX or even the new KO2's would have probably faired better, especially with a little bit of sidewall bite. Never the less, still fun to see their unsticking routine... in the rain... on a bridge, a sketchy bridge...

I know people like to act like Monday-morning quarterbacks when discussing these kinds of shows, but the reality is an independent and small group like XO is going to do everything it can to get sponsors and cut down on operating costs...there is really nothing unscrupulous or 'sell-out' about it...XO isn't made of money and they need to work around a budget to make these shows happen.
That, and let's be honest, perhaps 10% of their driving, if that, has been in the mud. The rest has been on pavement or dirt/gravel roads. They probably knew in advance what type of terrain they were going to encounter and planned accordingly.

Loved this episode, seeing some real adversity versus haggling with border agents... But then the last few episodes have been solid for me.
At one point I was sponsored in something, got some amazing product as part of that, when asked for feedback on the product I always mentioned my deal. I have no problem with them talking positive about the tires since they are up front about the sponsorship. Its not like they are pimping crap, I mean Toyota and General tires seem to have a good rep...:wave:

Is anyone from XO or is Kurt on this forum?
If possible, I'd like to hear some feedback on why the Tacoma seemed to do somewhat better on the muddy hills and terrain while the 4runners struggled a bit.
I know the Tacoma has the supercharger. Did it also have different gearing and different tires from the 4runners? Did it weigh more or less?
It really just seemed to power through a lot of that muck...the 4runners held their own, but you could tell they were really searching for traction at times (I know their tires weren't M/T).
I'm not trying to start a debate on which platform is better; I admire both of them. I'd just be interested in hearing any technical explanation, especially from Kurt (who seemed to be the technical guru on the trip) on why there was a difference between the 2.

Last episode is up.
Basically a sentimental culmination and reflection of what they went through and the experience that it was.
Overall I think it was a good series and definitely put a bug in me for over landing that I never thought I had.
Probably the reason it was all put together and the sponsors like Toyota put in their investment. Other than the guys themselves wanting to do it in the first place of-course.

same tires, but the tacoma weighed in at nearly 8000lbs loaded. she's a pig. it probably did better because of all that weight on their generally narrow tires. sinking down through the muck to the hardpack

Could just be luck too. I expected them to use crawl when going up those long muddy stretches, I would have). I'm surprised Yota didn't make them highlight it at least once. MTS and Crawl are two of the sexiest things on the TE!
