You turn ATRAC off when you might need to take traction to the point of spinning. For example stopped on a slick snowy hill. You need to get going but if you are just getting starting you might need to spin a bit to accelerate. If ATRAC is on then it will brake a spinning wheel. Not good if you need to spin to get initial movement.

Think you are thinking of TRAC, which will cut throttle.

ATRAC does not really care if you are spinning or not.. It only attempts to keep all wheels moving at the same speed. Only works in 4Lo...

However, this occasionally causes undesirable behavior in extremely low traction scenarios where momentum is needed. From a stop... I've never seen it be an issue.

Geez you guys need to come down to my house. I cut 17 trees in two miles off of one of our local trails recently after a hard rainstorm. No fun at all. That's what I saw in the videos.

Yes, there are times you need no traction aids because you just need every last bit of traction to keep momentum. In the video it is mud and water. Around here it is mud and snow.

I'm not sure why.. ATRAC + locker usually works fine. Although, I'm pretty sure in a stock configuration, with the e-locker on, the ATRAC will cut off over 4mph anyway.

I would not necessarily use these guys a point of reference for the best offroading techniques... In fact for that particular river crossing. I would have considered just using atrac because of the current and the likelihood of of the vehicle getting spun with the rear locker on.

But there is no single answer...Just about any mode would have probably worked.

IDK, something about that show really bugs me but I will still watch it for the entertainment factor.

Just makes me feel a bit uncomfortable for some reason. Can't really pinpoint why. Maybe it is just the narration. It's just too darn serious for such amateur activities. Call it what it is.. guys doing worthless stuff that is sort of fun. It's not some deep adventure into the soul... Plus, they are way over prepared and carry way too much crap with too much product placement.

Packing up enough equipment (except fuel LOL) to go open an old trail in mosquito infested logging country does not seem like much fun to me. :shrug: I guess it sells shit, which is the entire purpose of the show.

But I think it is paying off for Toyota. I've had 4 or 5 guys in JKs seek me out on trails and ask me about my "TRD Pro" LOL 4runner. They always bring up this show and talk about how cool it is and mention they are thinking about getting a 4runner and setting it up for overland LOL.
