Expedition plowed into me. :(

Hi all. I was sitting at a stop light Friday night and looked in the rear view just in time to see a Ford Expedition speeding towards me. Evidently the lady was texting or something and slammed directly into the back of my beautiful black 2005 4Runner. The hit was dead center but all of the back lights and even the tailgate glass survived. The bottom part of the tailgate as well as the bumper were damaged pretty bad as you can imagine. The worst part is the heavy steel beam under the bumper is now somewhat bent. The insurance company made out a check to me for $3700 (which is inline to what the estimate for repair came out to be) and said if unforeseen issues come up at the body shop they will work with the shop to get that handled as well. Also they will give me a rental car for 9 days while it's being repaired. My question is, would you guys just deposit the check, try to find another wrecked 4Runner with a good back-end to get parts from, and do the work yourself...or would you go ahead and get it done professionally. The kicker is, I won't get any money for how much this is going to depreciate the 4Runner with a now wrecked title...and I was hoping to get a new 4Runner in a couple of years. I have 130,000 miles on it right now. What would you guys do?

I've wrecked my 4unner multiple times and never been compensated for the depreciated value. Also I would definitely pay the professionals to get the job done. Comes with warranties and peace of mind. Do you have any pictures of the wreck? I have been hit from behind in my 4runner multiple times.

Use a body shop. It's very common for unseen damage to appear during the repair, something that the adjuster may have missed or was unable to see. I had a similar wreck a few years ago. The electrical wiring loom inside the tailgate needed to be replaced, but it wasn't listed in the original estimate and added another week to the repair time, which fortunately, the body shop and insurance company had to deal with, not me.

rack up the medical bill and made the person at fault pay for it.
...and then go directly to jail, do not pass go.

Sorry to hear that. I would personally take it to a shop that you trust. I would trust them seeing more issues that I would probably miss.

rack up the medical bill and made the person at fault pay for it.

That is exactly what I hate about people in this country. It is the reason why it is a PITA to get an insurance company to do what they actually are there to do (granted it also has to do with them wanting to make as much money as they can).

Make sure you take it to a shop you trust, not that they trust. The will not "work with the shop" on your behalf. They will do so to keep costs down.
