Extended Warranty

Just purchased an Inferno TRD Pro 2015 4Runner on May 10. I purchased the 8 year/120k warranty from Toyota for $2,600. I was able to also get an 8 yr/100k warranty for $1900 from my bank. Both are cancellable within 30 and 60 days, respectively.

Question for 4Runner owners - are the extended warranties worth it? I'm trying to decide which to cancel, or if I should cancel both. I was told the Nav system alone would be $4k to replace, but not sure if that would go out in 8 years anyway. I'm also worried that since this is an off road vehicle, more may go wrong? Please help a newbie out!

Consider that the company providing that warranty has to pay all their staff AND keep the lights on in their building AND make money as a company, and they do that by making sure that the money they charge to sell a warranty is substantially more than the money they spend paying out claims, and then see if you really need to ask that question.

Just wondering if those with older 4runners (6-8 years old) have had issues with theirs that would cover the cost of the warranty. I've only ever had a Honda, and it only had one "major" repair in 11 years that was $1,500. Assuming that Toyotas are the same but didn't want to risk it
 
I was in the same boat as you about a month ago..... I also have an 8yrs/125,000 extended warranty toyota platinum ... I got it for $1350.00.. if you shop around and have dealers bid for it, you can definitely bring that price down.... Also, the reason I got it for so cheap is because I bought it from a big dealer, they make money off of the number of warranties they sale, so Im assuming they are just trying to meet quotas or they make money off the sheer numbers they get (assumption, not fact)..... but that was after I gave them my lowest bid from another dealership..... Also, I have never bought a warranty before as I have never needed one with my other vehicles (I hate the fact that I am paying for peace of mind and I usually take very good care of my vehicles), I bought a warranty for this vehicle because this is the one I am keeping as long as I can, I figure at that price too it was a no brainer..If you have Geico insurance you can also check out there mechanical breakdown insurance, just an added premium and the cost isn't that bad. Make sure you read some threads on breaking in the vehicle(to include the suspension system), theres a lot of conflicting info out there, just go with a way you feel comfortable with and hopefully it would contribute to no issues down the road.....Good luck to you... welcome to the club

buy the toyota one. aftermarket extended warranty companies tend to sell a bunch of policies, then shut down several years later when reimbursements come due. quite a LUCRATIVE scam.
 
I got mine for $1600. Wouldn't work with me on the price of the warranty cuz I paid cash. I would go with. You never ever ever know. I knew a guy in 08, he just got his new runner and I think it was 2k miles and he was having massive probs. with his driveline so it's worth the investment.
 
I won't elaborate in detail but my dad ran dealerships his entire life and he was adamant on refusing the extended warranties.

Ok - so how were these problems not covered by his factory warranty...?

I got the 7 year 100000 mile. I'm getting too old to crawl under vehicles anymore..... Hopefully will never even have to use it.
 
Waste of money esp on a quality rig like the 4Runner which is the second most reliable mass produced vehicle on earth only second to the land cruiser.
 
Search on toyotanation. There are a few dealers that sell the Toyota Platinum warranty really cheap.

- Noone here can answer your second question. It's an insurance policy, plain and simple. You have to decide whether or not to buy insurance.

- Now, as to cost. Use the alternate search up in the stickies, and you should be able to find it much cheaper. Me having that knowledge got my dealer to half of his asking price, bought with the new 4R.

- And which to buy? I can only suggest, but IF you do buy an EW, I'd say only buy the Toyota. It's good anywhere. I've heard way to many horror stories about third-party ones. I had one once, lifetime rust warranty - 3 years later out of business.

As long as it's the genuine Toyota warranty great ! it does add resale value and it is transferable to the new owner, however it adds nothing on a trade in as it's not transferable.
Extended warranties basically work like this with me , If I purchase the warranty I never need it (which is good) and it almost always guarantees me a touble free product. LOL , and then when I did not get it I wish I had.

That's right where I am. I bought one for 1800 and fear if I cancel I will need and and if I keep it I won't use it. I rarely if ever buy them but this 2015 is my first care with all the electronics auto trans and kdss...
 
It's a 7 year and covers everything towing and loaner car. Curious if that's a fair price?
 
Well, I am going to cancel it. Mostly for these reasons;
1, I have never bought one for anything ever big or small with no regrets.
2. This is my 4th Toyota and the only thing i ever warranted was a the cabin fan.
3. I drive <10,000 miles a year.
4. the dealer keeps trying to put the fear in me that some electrical/computer will fail and cost me a fortune. Which I kinda doubt. The more he trys to sell the more I dont believe.
5. best point made in my research - there are tones of people selling these things and clearly making a wad. Thus more scam than good.

Going to stick to my lifelong philosophy - no extended warranties - period.
