Extended Warranty

We recently purchased a new 2010 4Runner SR5, the dealer gave us $2000 off MSRP ($34,817) and $7000 for our 04 Tundra with 195K on it. A good deal I believe. We were then convinced to purchase an extended warranty, we weren't planning on getting one. We put 30K a year on our vehicle and are thinking with that kind of mileage it wouldn't hurt even though publications such as Consumer Reports say they're not needed if the vehicle has a good reliability record which of course the 4Runner has. We purchased one for our Tundra but never had to use it (big surprise!), we got a 4 yr / 125K platinum Toyota warranty for $1360 with no deductible for the 4Runner and have 30 days to cancel it. Part of me says to cancel it thinking it was the dealers way of getting some $ back but part of me says to keep it considering how many miles we put on our vehicle each year.

I would appreciate your thoughts, good or bad.

That's the one we purchased, 125K is the max for mileage, we got 4 yrs / 125K for $1396. After 4 yrs we will have 120K on our 4Runner. Thank for the info though!

The point was to ask THAT salesperson for his cost. They can quote you different numbers. He quoted me the 8yr/125K for $1,500 so the 4yr version should be significantly cheaper..........

Thanks again! I put in 2 requests from other dealers, one came back higher than mine the other I'm awaiting a reply.

The 2nd dealer just came back and quoted me $775 for the same warranty the dealer we bought our 4Runner from charged us $1360. 4yrs/125K

No brainer to cancel & switch!! Thanks again!

No, it was Toyota of Greenfield (Mass), I have seen them on multiple forums as offering very competitive pricing on these. Note if you financed your current warranty thru TFS they won't issue you a refund, they apply that money to your loans principal & interest with no changes in your monthly payment or loan terms. I have to purchase this new one and then cancel the old one. Saving $585, considering going back to my dealer and pinning them as to why they could offer me that price.

I got the platinum Toyota Extra Care from the dealer when i bought my 2010 Limited. I got a 6 year / 100,000 Mile Platinum Warranty, with a $0 deductible.

It was $1,250.00

It would cost you nothing but your time to see if you can get a better price than that. I would suggest sending an e-mail to Troy at the dealership I noted, state what plan you now have and request a quote from him, don't tell him what you are currently paying. He's saving me $585 off my 4yr/125K warranty.

FYI, unless Toyota has changed their policy, an extended warranty can be purchased ANYTIME during the original factory warranty period.
I purchased mine in month 35 of my factory warranty period.
IIRC, I paid $585 + tax for the 7 year 75K, 0 deductible Toyota Platinum Warranty.

I started looking at a 2nd 4runner (for the wife) a few months back. I called Toyota up directly and talked to one of the warranty reps. I asked him if it would be possible to purchase an extended warranty after the 36k miles. He said that as long as the dealer is willing to sell you the extended warranty, then yes. He also mentioned that their warranty office was seeing a lot of extended warranties being sold out on the east coast (i'm in Los Angeles). So he said that I might want to give them a call (east coast dealerships, couldn't give me a names) to see what kind of deals I get. At the time I was looking at a 4runner that had 54k miles on it.

About a month ago I looked at a 2006 T4R that had 52k miles on it. I asked the sales guy if I'd still be able to buy an extended warranty for the vehicle since it was past the 36k miles. He said "yeah, no problem"

Shop around I guess. :)

I just purchased an 8/75k extended warranty from Wakefield Toyota (Jerry - 800-530-5789) after talking to Shaun McKinsey at the PA dealer, who said he couldn't come close even with a group buy.

Wakefield couldn't lower the price for a group buy, especially as the newest price they had was $709 (he honored the $684 price but said he couldn't much longer).

There might be better deals by $50 or so out there, but I thought this was fair and I wanted to get it in place.

As far as needing the warranty, it was really just a question of can I afford $684 without much heartache (yes) and can I afford a new transmission or windshield or sunroof or xreas or umpteen other things that cost thousands (no). It may be a waste of money in such a reliable vehicle but I figure I bought piece of mind.

This is a great thread - very helpful to know the warranty prices. Wish I'd known about the huge variety of prices out there before I bought the warranty for mine.

Can't complain too much though - it's already paid for itself and then some (new master cylinder ain't cheap!)

This is why I sometimes buy extended warranties - great summary

Secondly most people don't understand that you can buy EW's from any dealer. They have their car all figured out and negotiated then they drop $2,800 on a warranty that can be had for $1,200 or something. They were so happy with the free floormats that they don't realize that everything has to be negotiated with a car dealer.

You can only get a Toyota extended warranty while the bumper-to-bumper warranty (3/36) is still in effect.
