I just recently found this forum after deciding to purchase a 2012 4R. Lots of good info here on EVERYTHING!
I took delivery last Friday - 2012 Blizzard Pearl 2WD Limited loaded - added Alum RBs, Cargo Cross Bars, Prem Mats, Mud Guards, Window Tint, DE Guards, Pinstriping. Also Veh Shield Pkg, Ball Mt and 3M Paint Protection-didn't order these, but they were already on the vehicle. Traded in an 07 SR5 with 110K miles, and got what I think is a very good deal - trade diff of $25,339 before TTL. Anyway, when I got to the finance dept, they do the usual push for the maint pkg and ext wty. I had done some research on ext wty but not the maint pkg. After looking it over, I decided the maint pkg was worth it, $1400 for 6 yrs/85K which covers all my maint appts (every 5K), as I calculated each service I would be getting over that period to be about $25 each, so I thought it was a good deal - all service done at the dealership at every 5K interval.
Now on to the ext wty. I bought one with the 07 4R and it paid off as I had three repairs done and they more than paid for the cost of the wty. I was quoted a 5yr/100K wty at 1995 (w/a $100 "disappearing" ded?). When I asked to see what it covered, the guy said "well it's easier to tell you what's not covered, as it covers most everything" (straight sales pitch I know). Anyway, after looking over what little info he gave me and with my past experience, I decided to buy it. I know I should have done some more research, but I felt comfortable since my last one paid off. It is through MPP, which I hadn't heard of at the time but have since researched. The guy said this (MPP) was the only ext wty plan the dealership offered.
So yesterday, I began to do some online research on MPP and didn't like what I found. They are rated C by the BBB and not accredited by them. Further, their complaints online caused me to reconsider my purchase. I found online that Toyota offered ext wty and got a quote on my vehicle for the same coverage (5yr/100K), Platinum coverage, $0 ded at $830! Almost blew me away!
Anyway, to make a long post short (sorry), I'm canceling the MPP wty and going with the Toyota wty. I can cancel the MPP wty w/in 30 days so I've already called the dealership and told them. The finance guy said they don't sell the Toyotal ext wty and he was shocked (or so acted) at how low my price for the Toyota wty was. Pays to do research, obviously. So check out Toyota's extended wty plan if you are looking - much better than the third party wtys the dealer pushes, imo.
Now I have a question for everyone - have any of you ever had the Toyota Platinum ext wty? If so what was your experience with it? Also, it looks like I don't have to buy it right away, but can do so up until the factory wty expires at 36K, and they offer a wty all the way up to 8 yrs/125K, which at $1600 is STILL cheaper than the dealer's ext wty. I won't until 36K to buy, but will probably buy it in the next few months.
Thanks for all the good info! Really enjoy this board!
