Extended Warranty

silly question but would the 7/125 extend from original purchase date? as i'm about at 3 years so would it add 4 years or 7 more years. 4 i believe yes?

Also is warranty transferable to next owner? 0 deductible?

His prices on 4Runner 4x4. Local prices before state sales tax in parentheses.
6/125 Platinum $0 deductible - $1019 (1740)
7/125 Platinum $0 deductible - $1144 (1840)
Prices are no taxes or fees unless you live in Kansas.

Plenty of guys on here has bought the ext warr, so don't and swear you don't need them. I will buy a 7/125 Platinum $0 deductible - $1144 when it come close to my 36K or 3 years which ever come first. I have spoken to Jerry at Midwest and he is a cool guy, you could also ask your local dealership if they would match the price but then you would have to pay sales tax.
Up to you, welcome to the board.

Glad I found this thread again, I'm at 27,088 miles right now on my 2011 LE, bought new in May 2011, just sent Jerry an email, will wait for his reply. :biggrin2:

It is from the purchase date and is a zero deductible transferable.

Can someone confirm this? I was under the impression that it was extended after the 3 year stock warranty? i.e 7 year is 7 year after the original 3 years has ended.
If it runs consecutively with the standard warranty, why wait until the 3 year one has nearly ran out.

I'm waiting to close to the end of my current 3 year warranty so I have a better idea of how much mileage I'm putting on my vehicle so I can better guess which warranty makes sense, e.g. 7 year 100k miles or the 7 year 125k miles. Also might as well not pay $1,200 now when I can do it 2.5 years from now. Although if the price goes up that second argument might fail. Warranty period concurrent, i.e. 7 year warranty gets you 7 years from in service date, not 10. If I'm wrong that would be great.

I know this geography based pricing makes other dealers made and they complain to Toyota hq no telling how long we will be able to buy them for this reason I did not wait.

Yes, it is from purchase.

The reason to wait is so you can judge which warranty will best suit your needs for mileage and time.

I just bought a 2013 SR5 and got the Platinum Warranty and Prepaid Maintenance Plan from the dealer. After reading these threads, it definitely looks like I need to cancel them and call Jerry.

The Platinum Warranty definitely sounds like a good deal, but what about the Prepaid Maintenance Plan? This is my first Toyota, so I'm not familiar with the pricing of the scheduled maintenance services. Do you generally think the Prepaid Maintenance Plan is worthwhile? Or am I better off just paying for scheduled maintenance out of pocket?

Does the PMP cover anything else that can't be calculated in advance?

I purchased both an extended warranty (5/100K) and the prepaid maint plan from the dealer when I bought my 4R in April. Shortly after reading the posts here, I cancelled both. I plan to buy an extended wty from Jerry at some point, as it will be about $1300 less than what the dealer wanted, but I'm waiting to see what my annual miles driven are to know which one to buy. Here's a link to what's covered under the Toyota Extended Warranty:
Toyota Financial Services

Jerry's quote to me for this warranty (May 2012 pricing) was:
TOYOTA 4 RUNNER 2WD
5 YEAR 80,000 MILES $474.00
5 YEAR 100,000 MILES $629.00
5 YEAR 125,000 MILES $799.00
6 YEAR 75,000 MILES $509.00
6 YEAR 100,000 MILES $749.00
6 YEARS 125,000 MILES $1,019.00
7 YEARS 75,000 MILES $594.00
7 YEAR 100,000 MILES $889.00
7 YEARS 125,000 MILES $1,169.00
8 YEAR 75,000 MILES $709.00
8 YEARS 100,000 MILES $1,039.00
8 YEAR 125,000 MILES $1,424.00

Prices may have changed since then so shoot him an email and ask.

Jerry also sells the prepaid maintenance plan - his prices for those (in May) were:
3 YEARS 35,000 MILES $355.00
3 YEARS 45,000 MILES $495.00
4 YEARS 45,000 MILES $505.00
4 YEARS 60,000 MILES $805.00
5 YEARS 55,000 MILES $625.00
5 YEARS 75,000 MILES $980.00

I did some cost analyses for both plans, and while I think the ext wty is a good deal and well worth the investment, I don't believe the prepaid maint plan is worth it. Here's what you get with the 5/75 plan (at a cost of $980), according to the 4R's Scheduled Maintenance Guide (remember you get free oil change and tire rotation for 2yrs or 25K miles):

Service Performed (# times excl. 2yr/25K)
Rotate tires (10)
Oil/Filter change - synthetic 7 qts. (5)
Clean cabin air filter (1)
Lubricate propeller shaft (4)
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt (4)
Replace cabin air filter (2)
Replace engine air filter (2)

For me, the cost of $980 just didn't justify this (the dealer sold it to me for $1400!). Therefore, I will be paying for all these maint costs out of pocket, after the initial 2yr/25K. You can research it for yourself at:
Toyota Financial Services

Also, it's important to note that if you purchase the ext wty or the prepaid maint plan, they start when you purchase the vehicle, and are NOT extensions of the factory warranty (3 yrs/36K miles) or the two year "Toyota Care" (2 yrs/25K miles). So take that into consideration as well.

Good luck!

Both Jerry and Troy offer square deals. I ended up buying a warranty from Jerry a couple of years ago. When I bought my new 4Runner last month, I gave him another call while I was waiting for new tires to be installed. 10 minutes and a few bucks later, I had my extended warranty.

I don't remember why I went with Jerry instead of Troy...I think Jerry was a few bucks cheaper. Anyway, just call one of these two guys, and you'll be taken care of.

Alright, I'm definitely convinced to call Jerry and pick up the extended warranty.

But what about the Prepaid Maintenance? Jfdallas, I've never had a car new enough to even consider taking it to the dealer for maintenance, so I have no idea how much those service items would cost if I paid out of pocket for them. I guess I could just call the dealer and see how much each of those service intervals costs, add them up, and if it comes out to same/lower than PMP, then skip it. Am I missing anything here?

Thanks everyone.

Pull out your scheduled maintenance guide that came with your vehicle and see what is required at each interval - this is what will be covered by the PM agreement. And make sure you use the one specifically made by Toyota for your 4R, not the dealer "standard" maintenance guide that they give to every customer regardless of what type of vehicle they purchase. It includes a lot more recommended services (at least my dealer's did). Then you'll need to get some estimates on what these services will cost you. I called Pep Boys and a couple other places for the tire rotations and oil changes - and NO I would not get these done at the dealer if I paid for them myself. To give you an example, a synthetic oil/filter change for my vehicle at Pep Boys is $65 - the dealer's cost was $109. The cabin and air filters can be purchased from Auto Zone for about $10-$15 and they are super easy to change. And remember, you get your first two oil changes (at 10K and 20K) and your first five tire rotations (at 5K, 10K, 15K, 20K and 25K) free from the dealer as part of the "Toyota Care" on all new vehicles.

Just do your homework and you'll probably come to the same conclusion that I did - you can do all these (or have them done somewhere other than the dealer) for much less than the PM agreement costs.

How much did your dealer want for it and what was the period (months/miles)?

Dealer wanted $625 (or $650, I forget which) for 5 year/55,000miles. I will call around to get prices for the services.

It sounds like PMP would be roughly equivalent to going to the dealer for everything. But like you said, I'm not likely to go to the dealer for simple oil change. Maybe for 30k service, but probably overpaying for the rest...

Alright, I will be emailing Jerry tomorrow and canceling dealer plans. Thanks for your advice.

Another positive experience with Jerry :)

I sent him an email last night, and tonight I have the 7 year extended warranty on my 2011 LE. A couple of emails, he looked my truck up on the Toy computer, one phone call, and we're done. He runs a very professional operation there, and saved me hundreds of dollars compared to my local dealer.

This is only the 2nd extended warranty I've ever bought on anything. But, with all those bells and whistles costing as much as the do on the LE, I didn't want to chance a broken NAV unit, or ECU, etc.

If you're getting the extended warranty, I recommend getting that zero-deductible warranty through him.

After Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University I would have chosen to not buy my extended warranty. That's what emergency funds are for. #bummer #regret for $1,800.

Is the extended warranty bumper to the bumper? Is everything covered? Say a cowl clip breaks when the vehicle is 9 years old due to oxidation, would that be covered?

You should read warranty policy. I might have scan somewhere...I'll check.

Maybe and maybe not... the $1,800 warranty may be a bad idea, but a more middle of the raod warranty say 6 yr / 100k miles for $749 may be a smart idea. If any large part failed the cost of replacement and the labor would easily exceed the warranty cost.

Hey tjnaples! Did you crunch any numbers for canceling your warranty? It's pro-rated money back.
