Exterior cameras when Off-Roading?

Have been thing of adding a rear view camera to my 03.
Would like to know if the camera lenses become so covered with dust when off-roading on dusty sandy roads and tracks to make the camera useless? Suspect the same will apply when driving in rain or snow conditions.
I know rear-view cameras can be very useful when hauling and connecting to a trailer, which I never do. Would seem almost pointless when off-roading, to have to get out to clean the camera before backing up.
Any first hand experience comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

I off road a lot and I've never had the dust be more than barely noticeable. I suppose mud might obscure it but not had that happen. Same with rain. Course the factory backup camera is in a fairly protected place...

i use my stock rear view camera when offroading all the time. its a great way to see others on the trail as well if needed. i added a switch to mine to have it able to be on all the time and it comes in handy

I did the same and hardly use it unless I'm standing still watching for the truck behind me.

Is there a write-up already for this mod? I can't find one that works with the stock nav. How did you do it?

Lots posted but this is the best starting place:

Or go here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/125438-howto-rear-backup-camera-mod.html

Or here where I ask JA a bunch of questions so I could successfully do it. I did and it's easier than it seems to be.

I'd actually like to add a front view camera for offroading. Being able to look at the ground right below your bumper would be nice for going over/around ricks and whatnot.

From what I have seen the aperture is very small so most droplets of water and dust don't affect it as much as you would think. I can see it being an issue in mud and heavy dust, but depending on where you mount it, it might not be a big deal; mud being the biggest issue as dust would probably take a lot to muck up the image.
