Extra part after shop made repairs…..help!

Ok, I had some trade work with a local shop so I decided to replace the leaking rack and pinion as well as have them do the valve cover gaskets about a week ago. While mounting some new off-road lights I had the hood up running wires and noticed this pin and spring.

I have no idea if it’s related to my valve cover gasket job, rack and pinion job, one of the mechanics tools, or the Kia he was working on in the next bay? But I do know I haven’t seen it before and can’t find where it goes.

Does anyone recognize this?

What year? I don't recall seeing that in any 3rd gen. I was thinking of possibly 01 or 02 fog light adjuster, but that's just a guess.

It’s a 99. I’m hoping it’s something silly like that. I should have said that the spring comes right off. Nothing holds it in place.

Might it be a piece from one of the tools the mechanic used?

I've seen parts like that on adjustable circlip pliers, the kind that will work on both internal and external circlips.

The mechanic thinks it was from a hose clamp of some sort? Who knows, I guess a weekend in canyon lands will work out the issues of there are any…. Thanks for the help.

If that’s the case there would be threads of the worm gear visible.

I can't see that being clamp. That broke off something. Nobody recognizes it so most likely it didn't come off your rig. :)

Looks like something that activates a light, like in the door jams. Is there something similar under the hood, a spring loaded cylinder for some type of activation?

No, nothing of that type at least. Toyota doesn't really use pins in the engine bay as they tend to work their way loose over time. Even the hose clamps are one solid piece with no screws or hinges.

I agree, I think it was a foreign object dropped in your engine bay and lost and they moved on.
