f*cking tranny issues

Pretty much what frodiesel said clear and to the point. And is your issue at hand and is the same issue T4R2014 is having and didn't even know it just thinks it's his ebrake locking up....your reheating up the fluid breaking yourself free.

My axle seals are fine.

sup dudes. i'll let my rig warm up for 10 minutes before I take off. I put her in reverse to back out of my driveway - and it acts like brakes are on. I have to rev her up to 2500 or so to get her to move.

I'll force her out of the driveway, drive around the block, and it seems fine after that.

This is a very new symptom. I had the transmission drain & filled by Toy Automotive in Littleton.

It still does it though. Brakes frozen? Highly doubtful. I dunno - when I shift into reverse...I can HEAR some shit going on underneath. It doesn't sound good.

I found my rattle.. skid plates.

Just lift the axles and spin the tires to see if there's any restriction. If there is investigate at that wheel. If you find no restriction then you very well could have a tranny problem.

All this talk about Trannies, I was sure StreetCreeper would have some funny picture on this thread by now.

My axle seals are fine too.

Today I went for a ride... now 1st gear is having problems. RPMS jump up as I accelerate, die down, then jump back up to where it was. fffffffff

Had same exact issue in cold weather. Basically my rear axle was leaking.

I've lived in Denver 4 years and never been a problem.
I recently switched to all synthetic fluids...

dont mean your bearing grease isnt leaking! check your rear brakes carefully, all the components inside and outside

Trust me, I've already overanalyzed the situation and I know it's my rear brakes.

I was thinking about going synthetic but after reading about different oils on the Web, that synthetic is far superior in its lubricating properties but has a smaller molecular structure than conventional oil, therefore, if your seals are worn, they are more likely to leak.
I'm running synthetic now, in the rear, as I have changed the seals, but conventional in the front diff..... the seals in the front diff are a lot more work to replace and I'm not going to take a chance. I'm running synthetic pretty much everywhere else, however!
If you discover your problem is a leaking seal, don't forget to ensure the rear diff breather is clear.... that maybe a contributing factor or the cause as to why the seals leaked. The smart thing is to install an extended diff breather....

sounds like caliper sticking to me...up front.

If you use your ebrake they are known to freeze up in the winter and not releasing...I usually just leave in gear or park in a flat area if there's a chance it'll be really cold out.

Wtf is up with all the tranny issues now!? :(

Edit: Doesn't sound like a tranny issue to me.

What kind of issue does it sound like to you then?

It does this all after having a drain and fill by dealership?

Absolutely. If that were to happen, you would likely smell the scent of "burning brakes".

That's a strange issue, Bijan.
Just to rule it out- could you jack the front end up sometime before you take off? Verify both tires/wheels/rotors spin freely? At least it would rule stuck calipers out.

Is there a nice jolt and bang before you get moving normally? I'm betting on the ebrake seizing. Mine has been locking up rock solid lately, leading to some lovely early morning brake stands to show the neighbors how much power this baby has before the ebrake unseizes.

The same, about 2500 is where one wheel starts moving and I get into this 1mph tire smoking drift.

Brakes are not sticking. Shift cable linkage is working.

When I put it in gear, it simply did not move.
It has been towed to Toy Automotive in Littleton.

Where do I buy the best upgraded remanned transmission?

My first guess would be to go with Marlin Crawler
But they do manual only apparently

Here is an A340F for $1995 with torque converter
https://spprecision.com/products/a3....html#/model_series-4runner/vehicle_year-2002

And another A340f for $2000
A340F Transmission For Sale

I don't want to gamble with a junkyard transmission... I would want a new / remanned - possibly even upgraded.

Can anyone shed light on this horrible time for me?:frusty:

So I'm guessing the drain and fill killed it? Worth the gamble I guess. It sounds like a torque converter issue, but if you are tearing into it then just replace the whole transmission. I wouldn't recommend a used one either. These 01-02 A340F's fail way more often than the 96-00. Planetary gear failures usually from what I've seen. I would get a remanufactured and run Redline D4 in it. I've heard great things about Level 10 transmissions.

I'm guessing so too.

I dont see a340f listed on their website - Toyota Transmissions | Toyota Torque Converter | Toyota Valve Body

Your signature says u have a blown 2002. Those trannys are controlled and tuned to shift softly and thus have a lot of clutch slip between shifts. Your clutch pack is probably shot. Time for rebuild. Gadget did a write up on upgraded clutch packs years ago. U can also do a valve body shift kit for harsher shifts. Replace the torque converter too. If u have Coolant in your tranny fluid it will cause slipping too.

to be sure its not the brakes drive a short distance like a half mile light on the brakes then place finger on the brake rotors/drums they should be warm not hot. all should feel about the same temp..

so if that is good then a drive train issue.

Pretty sure revving to 5000 rpms would push through a frozen brake line

I have access to an 02 trans if you need. 303.746.9938. I would go us d before remanned all day. It'll be a lot cheaper too. Jut text me

Did this Toy/Lex shop know about the issue before hand? Was their drain and fill an attempt to fix the issue, or just maintenance?

For shits and grins, make sure they actually FILLED the tranny, and not just drained it.

That would honestly just be cruel if that was the issue.

Either way, if he was driving around without tranny fluid, he would kill it by now.

Well if it was just a drain and fill, it wouldn't be empty, just about a 3rd low.
The fluid would expand as it got hotter, and make it 'feel' better.
No 'bang' as the brakes released, as mentioned above.

This would (IMO) also explain why 1st gear is now having problems too. Lack of proper levels of fluid slowly killing it, as you mentioned.
