f*cking tranny issues

I think Camelback has a new one for $2500. Check their website.

It sounds like your clutch pack is on its way out. If you have an extra $50, do a drain and fill. Substitute 1/2 qt of ATF with Lucas trans fix and give it some time to work. I'd use Castrol Import ATF as the new ATF.

It isn't magic in a bottle but I have seen it work to help people get down the road until getting their tranny rebuilt or replaced:

Pretty sure revving to 5000 rpms would push through a frozen brake line

I doubt it is a frozen brake line . Many times on old vehicles the brake calipers or the rear drums do fail causing this. I had this summer a brake cylinder fail causing the drum to drag .

another issue maybe a bad rear diff.

+1 on Lucas.
If you do the Lucas, make sure to heat it up in front of a space heater, or put the bottle in some hot water for a while, etc. That stuff is EXTREMELY thick. It makes tree sap look like water in comparison.
Also helps to have your tranny relatively warm too, and make sure to drive it for a bit afterwards so it cycles through the whole tranny and doesn't just sit and goop in the pan during cold winter nights until you drive it next.

I dunno. For $2,500 I myself may consider getting a new to me 2nd or 3rd gen with a known good tranny, except it'd prob be more near $3-5k considering OP is in Denver and we are insane about Toyota 4x4's out here price wise.

This, then part out existing 4Runner to make up the balance, if not more.

Ok. So even though the cable mechanism isn't frozen, you're basically saying the SHOE (or shoes) becomes frozen to the rear brake drum.

That used to happen to several cars my parents had when I was growing up, and I had a Jeep Cherokee with the issue. Moving the vehicle forward just a little bit would allow the brakes to release and it would drive normally.

So I finally got the call back from the shop. They said no codes and still can't seem to find something other than a little slippage in 1st gear.

They're telling me it goes fine without revving up high.

???

I'm looking for a 01-02 transmission now...
