factory gearing question

Hello, I recently bought a 1990 4runner and the previous owner managed to paint over the doorjamb sticker that has the factory diff info on it...is there anywhere else on the vehicle I could look to find out the original tire-size & gear ratios?

There should be a plate on the engine compartment firewall. If that fails, you can look at the color of the pinion paint on the flange (which is unreliable) or do the spin-and-count method, which is reliable but imprecise.

Some trucks got 31s at the dealer, so the tire size on the door jamb isn't always reliable anyway.

Two suggestions one try to use some paint thiner and clean the decal. Two take the front diff cover off and do a ring and pinion count. This is a chart that will tell you gear ratio

update: using paint thinner on the door-jam plate did not work...but thinner + steel wool + patience did work; I used single '0' grit while being careful not to go to deep.

G294 so 8" rear, 4.10's and a 4 pinion open diff ...not the best, but not the worst either.

One thing I have learned on my truck....after 20+ years, but assume what came factory on the truck is still there. I'd jack it up and do the spin test. Its fast and accurate. Chalk the driveline, spin the tire around for 10 revolutions of your chalk lines while counting the tire revolutions then divide by 10. Super easy.
