Yes, there's a time delay from the time you unlock with the key FOB and NO doors are opened that it'll relock. I had this happen recently and was surprised how fast it relocked (within about 20 seconds? I wasn't counting).
Personally, I think it's a great feature. I've had the car unlock erroneouslly while the FOB was in my pocket. Had it not been for the relock feature, the truck may have sat unlocked while I was out-of-town for a few days later that week.

Yup, as already said, it is a "feature" and not a bug. My wife's '04 Camry had the same feature - though it was shown in that car's owner's manual. I think it said (for that car) that if the car was remotely unlocked but not opened within 30 seconds, it would auto-relock. I think that particular book called it a safety feature, so you've got me as to exactly what is safe about it.
Maybe the designers are thinking you could accidently unlock a car as you put the fob in your pocket - in say a mall parking lot - and programs the cars to relock as said safety feature. I know at least twice a year I accidently activate the panic button on each of my various key fobs - so I guess it isn't so much of a reach to think I could also accidently unlock my 4Runner too.
I haven't messed with it much on my new 4R, but in my wife's old Camry (has since been traded), even if you remotely opened the trunk after unlocking the car - but didn't actually open a door - it would still relock the doors after 30 seconds. I do not, however, know what the exact time period is before a 4R relocks.

This was actually a major disappointment for me when I got my remote starter kit. The way it was wired, the remote starter remote will unlock the doors but not re-lock them after 20 seconds. I also lost the tone I'd get if I try to lock the doors remotely while one of them is ajar. I was just starting to appreciate those features, too.

You don't have to go to dealer to do it, you can do a search for 2008 4runner and there is quite a few sites that tells you how to reprogram this "feature" on your own.

This feature is in my 2001 (3rd gen.) as well as my 04. Sometimes when I hit the button and it opens up the car instead of locking it, I let it lock on it's own. However in the 4th gen, when you shut the door, the inside light stays on for awhile, it will go off instantly if you lock it. If I make a mistake on that I hit the lock button to save the light and battery.
I first notice this on my 2001 camping trip to Newfoundland, My wife asked to open the car while I was in the tent, 30 seconds later it locked back up. I think it is a good idea, but I guess it can be annoying to some.
