Factory NAV functionality in T4R

Can anyone who has a NAV in the 2010/2011 T4R comment on the functionality? Can you operate it while the vehicle is in motion? How does it compare to Garmin functionality? I am trying to decide if I should opt for the Toyota NAV system or go with a Garmin.

Do a search and you'll find plenty of threads that discuss this.

In a nutshell, more than 1/2 of the menus are disabled while in motion.

Opt out and get a Garmin.

The nav functionality isn't as good as a good aftermarket device (such as a Garmin). However, the nav system does include the JBL stereo system and the full screen backup camera. Couple of nice features.

You can also get or make a hybrid disc that allows you to access these functions while in motion

Im coming from the world of tom-tom and iphone4 navigation, and I have no major problem with the factory nav. It does lock you out of certain things when the car is in motion. This is a slight annoyance if you have a passenger in the car, but I personally dont think its that big of a deal and think it is slightly blown out or proportion, although I would like to have an unlock available for when I have a passenger in the car.


A company called "prestige society" makes a device you can have hardwired into your nav unit that will restore functionality to the nav menu while the car is in motion.

Anyone have a link for where to obtain a hybrid disc for restoring functionality while the car is in motion

Where is voice recognition in this thread?

Whereas some nav features are disabled while in motion - they are still available via voice recognition. I'm not sure why this isn't discussed more.

Personally I prefer to give voice commands, rather than touching the screen.

I was thinking the same thing. Everything works via voice command - it does a fairly decent job of it as well. I've personally been fairly satisified with mine.

voice commands do ok, but I'm sometimes a little impatient. ie. making a call: "phone" "phone", "dial by name" "dial by name", "someone" "hojo", "someone" "somewhat", "@$#@%$:rant:" "??????", "AHHHHHHH". That last part was a joke:lmao:. It understands me 90% of the times. I just need it go faster sometimes. :zoom:

Ahh, gotcha. I wasn't thinking about the fact they probably revised the nav to gen 6 with the 2010 Runners. Oh well, soon enough someone will figure it out. My hybrid disc works great with my 5th gen navs that I've had (E7008, E7007).

The 5th gens appear to come with version 10.1 of the software. Any idea what version yours is? Also, any idea where one can find out more about the hybrid discs?

I'm with you here. It doesn't have a problem understanding me most of the time, but waiting for it to speak out all of the options, for every sub menu, every time, gets on my nerves. Since it already shows all the voice options on the screen while it is reading them off, I'd like it if it just beeped to tell me it's waiting for a command, then another beep to tell me it accepted the command after I say it. I can glance at the screen if I forget an option.

That darn lady just speaks too slowly!

Hey Nashman - You know you can disable some of that? There's an option in there which basically turns off the prompting so it just "beeps" then confirms after you say something. Also, you don't have to say the "main item" first, a lot of times you can say subitems. (IE: Press voice key "dial by name", then "john smith") You don't have to say "phone" , "dial by name", "john smith") You can shortcut a lot of those menus, so just learn the submenus and you'll save a lot of time Also, if you don't have it set to not prompt, you can press the voice key AGAIN when she's speaking to interrupt her and say your command. Just FYI/FYA

Yup... :cowboy:

You can bypass some of the prompts - or immediately push the command button, you don't have to wait for the voice direction to complete.

You can also turn voice recognition guidance (the woman talking) off (Select Setup > Voice > Voice Recognition Guidance > OFF).

how exactly do you get it to simply beep to request and confirm commands (not read the list over and over)? i scoured the manual and somehow missed that. thanks for posting this! :cheers:
