Factory Nav

Not sure if this is a problem or something lacking. I have a new 06 4Runner Sport with factory Nav. Does anyone know if this unit utilizes "actual" vehicle speed (through GPS) to calculate ETA? I do know you can dial in a default speed for various roadways (highway, city, etc) Also, is there a screen that shows actual ground speed and elevation like one would find with the portable GPS units?


For setting destination, I have input "known" phone numbers in the unit that have been established for at least 15 years in a metro city. The unit never recognizes phone number inputs. Anyone else have this problem? or am I the problem?

The GPS does not use the actual vehicle speed. You have to set your estimated speed through the setup menu like you said. As for actual vehicle speed, you can go into diagnostic mode by holding the info button and flashing the parking lights on and off three times. I don't know if it gives altitude, but it tells you your speed and how many volts you are using. To get out of diagnostic mode, just hold down the display button on the nav. Just note that your radio will not work when in diagnostic mode. Also, I would say 70% of the phone numbers I know are in the nav. Are you typing in the zip code as well?

When the unit requests input for a phone number, does it actually ask for a zip code as well? If so, I can't find it.

Thanks for the info. So the factory nav is not as nice as the portable units. For the price charged to the window sticker, that sux.

I agree, it's nice to have a built-in OEM unit so it's covered by your insurance if it's stolen, but my Garmin 2610 was a much more informative and user friendly unit than the factory unit You could easily turn a display on or off showing the vehicle speed and direction, the street and address that you were on, and the next cross street or intersection coming up.

The backup camera is nice, very helpful when hooking up a trailer or boat, and it should help prevent backing over someone or something, but I don't know if I would choose the NAV option if I had it to do all over again.
