I put out a teaser post around a month ago about a mod i did to unlock the factory navigation features while the vehicle is in motion. I know a few of you were waiting for the full write up to be completed perhaps to build something similar yourself. Well I finally finished it...

I am so much happier about the purchase of the nav system now that I can actually use all its features while on the move. The mod comes in handy even more than I originally anticipated.

I can't believe no one else has responded to this yet, I guess not as many of us have the factory nav.
I would love to do this, not quite sure I have the skills though... Any chance you would build more and sell them complete? I know I would definitely buy one.

I would love to do this, but I definately don't have the skills to do this mod. GREAT JOB!! I hate to admit it, but when this factory nav breaks (or when I get bored with it), I'm heading aftermarket.

awesome I ordered one, Somehow I missed that the first time I read the writeup.

Cant wait to install it, my nav may actually be useful again, I always have my passenger just use my iPhone to look something up, but because I cant see that small screen while I drive, they usually need to direct me there which does not always work out as well.

installed it and it works great. I did have one issue but figured out how to fix it, I think it was my fault to begin with.
When I first installed it I tested in while in Park. The display showed 4mph so I figured it worked great. Put it all back together and went for a ride, but the Nav did not work, turned out because the factory VSS wires are so thin, the VSS wire on the vehicle side was not taped through the insulation.
I fixed this, but now my Nav still wasnt working.
When in Park, with the override on, the display was showing 21mph, obviously the override wouldnt work. When driving and the override off, my speedometer was multiplying my actual speed by about 6!
We figured it recalibrated itself, so we tried to find a way to calibrate it correctly. In the Menu button, under settings you can calibrate the Nav system after a tire change. This fixed the problem and the system works great now!
I just figured I would post this in case any one else comes across this problem.

Pirate, glad to hear back from you. I am a little confused on why it wouldn't work initially, but it looks like the connection that was made to the vehicle speed sensor wire wasn't solid enough. You cut the VSS wire clean thru and extended the vehicle side to override screw 2 and the nav side to override screw 3, correct? You are right about the factory wires being thin, I think they are 22 gauge.

Good tip about the calibration, I didn't need to do that but will keep it in mind for others in case.

Just ordered the module for my factory NAV - thanks J.A.!
The main advantage for me is I have USA Spec IPOD control module and I wanted to keep it while having override function in my NAV. And I am planning to do the backup camera mod at the same time.
Can't wait to get it done! I will post on my progress..

JA, this is awesome. I'm installing my factory nav in the coming weeks along with GX470 roof console, etc. After that I will be looking into this.

Thanks to J.A. and his instructions - the installation was very easy and everything worked as soon as I put the NAV unit back to its place.
I placed the two new switches on the center of the console (near the seat heating ones)..
Now I have best of the both worlds - proper IPOD control module from USA Spec and the NAV override.

Thank you for your reply J.A.! I have a question as well. I am definitely interested in this. Is there a separate module for the Video on Nav" and "Anytime Backup Camera Mods" as well? I am interested in having that override function as well as the video on the navi.

The Video on Nav and Anytime Backup Camera Mods are indeed on a separate module, but I do not offer that one for sale. The info you need to make one yourself is all documented on my site, but unfortunately the demand to build these is just not there.

Will your Nav override work on my 2012 Camry? It has the JBL in-dash Nav/DVD system. I assume that by overriding the speed sensor that besides all the functions becoming available on the Nav, the DVD will also work for the passenger? I am also interested in the backup cam mod...

Yes

Yes it will work with the 2012 Camry. If the DVD unlocks while driving between 1-5mph, then it will work as well.
