Dunlop Grandtrek AT20... the vanilla ice cream of the tire world...
nice quiet ride, wears fairly well, compliance over road surfaces..
They got me thru two winters trekking from the maine coast to the western maine mountains not this year nearly 40k on them, need to get snows this season.

A lot of guys here like to bash the Dunlops, but I thought they were decent tires for various conditions. They are quiet and ride comfortably, and they seem to have lower rolling resistance than most all-terrain type tires.

I looked up the TireRack rating just the other day. It's really not that bad if you look at it. Every catergory falls somewhere in acceptable, fair, and excellent. The only thing that makes the tires look bad is when you compare them with the ratings of other tires.... but keep in mind that TireRack is nothing but opinions, and you know what they say about opinions, right?

yea, Dunlop Grandtreks are decent good tires. it came OE on my mom's ML. they are quiet, wet capability is above average. they last pretty long, i think they lasted to about 35,000 miles on my mom's ML. but once it's getting worn to bold, they get noisy tho. but overall they are good tires for the price.

The OEM Dunlops that came on my 4Runner perform fine for me in non-winter driving.
I do run Blizzaks in the winter because the Dunlops are not suited for driving in snow.

I've said it before, the Dunlops aren't bad tires. They're not great tires, but they ain't bad either. I've got almost 40k on them and will probably swap them out with better tires this winter depending if we get a lot of snow. They've never left me stranded in the snow, I take things slow in the snow anyways so maybe I'm not asking more than what they can give.
I've also taken them Rausch Creek about 15k miles ago and they got me through there just fine. There was mud, rocks, a few water crossings and ascending/descending muddy hills. Anyone who went on that trip remembers that ice encrusted hill? Man that was a major puckker event! Went down the hill in low gear/4wd with the center diff locked. Boy was that a mistake. With the center diff locked, no ATRAC. Truck started going ass backwards and had to countersteer. Rememberd the center diff, and unlocked it. Performed much much better. I don't care what tires you're running when you're on ice, unless they're studded they aren't going to make much difference.

......Dunlops. They feel squishy around corners. loose on water with hydroplaning potential. going to Americas tire tomorrow. they have a $100.00 off special for a set. looking at Goodyear Ultra Grip SUV and trade in the Dunlops. When I get back to AK will have Blizzaks or Michelin X ice for winter and keep the Goodyears for the other 2 months......LOL

I now have 45k on my dunflops and they still have plenty of tread left. For dry conditions they seem to be fine, but it can be a bit scary when it rains. Fortunatly it has been pretty dry around here lately so the rain hasnt been a big deal. i hope to make it through the winter with these then get something else.
For seventy five bucks, I siped the five OEM Dunlops and the V8 4Runner's brakes a lot better and handles the wet pavement better too.
If I thought about it before I bought the 4Runner, I'd have probably requested the Michelin Cross Terrains.
Will most probably go to a Michelin more aggressive tire when these begin to show more wear.
Overall, IMHO, the Dunlop is a decent OEM tire but one would expect Toyota to put a 'better' tire on a 35K vehicle.

I guess I'll be the first to ripp on these tires on this thread. My set of OEM Dunflops were literally garbage. They tramlined all over the freeway, hydroplaned in heavier than normal rain, side walls were too soft and gave the truck a "mushy" feel (like grandma's oldsmobile), uneven circumferance - resulting in steering wheel vibration (beleave me it wasn't due to them being unbalanced; balanced 2wice), and they would always trigger my VSC around corners.
That's why I sold them for $350 bucks (2weeks old) to a local Tundra owner and bought myself a set of Nitto Terragrapplers. Now those tires are performance tires!
For you city folks, Dunflops will do you just fine. :bigok:

Update.....what a task-- after much debate at America's Tire I got the Pirelli ATR Scorpion.
Top Rated on Tire Rack and the only serious ice tire without getting into winter tires which for Sacramento would be silly
My 1st pick the Goodyear Silent Armor did not come in the 17inch so that left the Pirelli.
Driving home one word......glue. a little rougher ride and lower to the ground feel, and for this man that traction is what it's all about. Thanks for all the posts on tires for years....I have learned a lot.
OTD $639.00 for the 4 set.
