I know this has been discussed quite a few times here, but I want to share what happened to me yesterday. Hopefully it will serve as a bit of a warning.
I had been wanting a cargo basket for sometime, but I did not have the money for a baja rack or prinsu. I had done some searching on craigslist and found a what I thought was a great compromise. I found a Yakima megawarrior cargo basket with extension and a bunch of accessories for an absolute steal.
I had known the inherent weaknesses with the factory crossbars, but I figured it would not be too much of an issue because I was not going to put a significant amount of gear up there at one time. I have not carried anything in the basket yet, and had only strapped a jack to it. My t4r mostly sits in the driveway except when I get to take it out on the weekends.
Just from around the town driving the locking screws had worked themselves loose. The inertia from braking (or drag from highway speeds) shifted the basket back far enough that it popped off the leg covers of the rails and one flew off the truck when I was driving (went back for it and apparently it vanished, those damn things are not cheap). Apparently there are no stops on the rails aside from the plastic tabs on the leg covers. The basket and crossbars were slowly working their way off the rails!
Long story short, the factory rails and crossbars really are pieces of garbage and sometimes trying to save money costs you more money. Also, I will be removing the jack from the basket and checking the locking screws weekly.
