Factory Roof Rack?

Factory Roof Rack *need help*

I bought my '99 4Runner used and it didn't come with the factory roof rack. It has the black rails along the top but no rack. I don't have a pic of my rig but the one below shows what I'm talking about.

I really like the look of the factory roof rack and was wondering if it would be possible to attach one to the rails I have on my roof now. Assuming I can find a factory rack, which I anticipate might be kinda hard?, does anyone know if I would be able to easily attach it to the rails? Anyone done anything similar?

your missing the rails? i have all 5 cross bar. where you located at? i am willing to sell it for $40 plus shipping to your location. only thing i cant find are the knobs to screw them in, but a few number 10 bolts will work.

Would it be possible to attach the factory rack to those?
 
sorry, but they would not work with those rails. those are more like covers. let me try to snap some of the rails that are used for the cross bar.

That's what I was afraid of. They didn't look like I would be able to attach anything to them but I was hopeful someone might know how to make it work.

Does anyone know how I could go about trying to hook up a factory roof rack to my car? Either some way to rig it up to what I have now or a replacement of what I have now with the rails that work with the factory rack?

Ahh ok gotcha. So I'm gonna need to get those rails and replace what I have now and then I'll be able to attach the factory rack?
 
An OEM replacement will be pricey.

Several members have removed their rack, post a WTB in the For Sale forum.

Another option is a junk yard. More work but will cost less.
 
I bought both of them from the Toyota dealer. 91 bucks for two brand new ones.

They're discontinued so I was lucky to find the last two in California, I had to order them from Roseville Toyota (400 miles away from me)

They're called "Outer Skid Strips"

They come with the little covers at the ends but you have to be careful with them. I broke two of them, I had to bust out the super glue.

The knobs I also bought from the dealer. All 6 tie downs and all four star thumbwheels with the sliders for 30 bucks.

The crossbeams I got from a private seller.

It's all available, but hard to find. Contact your Toyota dealer and see if they can locate a dealer with "Outer Skid Strips" in stock. Call that dealer and give them your credit card. Mine arrived next day.

I have seen complete used roof racks on ebay from time to time. If you want to sell your existing rail covers let me know. I sort of want to see if I can remove my roof rack when not in use but still have something to cover holes in the roof. Those plastic strips would probably work for me.

Want to sell me your rack and outer skid strips and I'll give you my existing rail covers for free? Haha but no I understand you probably want to hang on to your roof rack and only remove it temporarily from time to time. If I end up finding a rack and outer skid strips I'll definitely let you have my existing rail covers though.

haha...I figured that was coming. I sort of have OCD and never get rid of anything originally installed on my truck. I plan on burying this one with me in it when the time comes :D Maybe I can get shot out into space, seatbelt on, hands strapped to the steering wheel (space suit on maybe), and travel the galaxies...dead of course. I would definitely die smiling if I knew that was in store for me. Note to self...I'll need new rims first.

Haha no worries, I figured you wouldn't want to part with your rack and rails. I'll make a post in the classifieds forum and see what I can get my hands on.
