Factory Speaker Question?

Hello,

I am interested in upgrading my factory speakers in my 2007 SR5. I have the standard setup (Non JBL). I have the seperate component speakers (6.5 inch) in the front, and 6.5 inch coaxials in the rear.

I am interested in upgrading to components in the front and rear. My question is this....Can someone tell me where the factory crossover's are located in the vehicle from the factory for the front speakers? I suspect they are mounted to the speaker themselves, both tweeters and drivers. I don't know for sure because I have not yet pulled the door panels off yet.

If someone could tell me where the crossover's are located I would really appreciate it. The new set of speakers I am considering have their own seperate crossover and I don't want to use them in conjunction with the ones from Toyota. I know I will need to remove them.

'07 Crossovers

There are no "crossovers", there are chokes. I just replaced my '07 stock speakers with Polks and I know what I pulled out.
Also, you don't have 6.5" seperates, you have 5 x 8 seperates.
The tweeter has a single "bass blocker on it.

As a matter of interest, the tweeter also has a bigger magnet than the 5 x 8 mid, wierd.

You are right about the fronts. My mistake.

Just out of curiosity....what Polks did you put in and how are you liking them? Did you need to put an amp in for them?
 
I have Polk db6500 components in the front doors of my Tundra, and you wil probably lose some bass, and yes, you really should have an amp for these speakers.

I put in a set of Polk 6.5" Momo components, mmc6500.
I sure didn't loose any bass, I did seal the doors and deaden them with Raamat.
The amp I used is an Alpine MRP f450 which has 70 watts x 4 channels. I chose this amp specifically for the Polks and a
JL 8WO sub I have.
I have posted some pics and details here in other threads.

I think the Polk speakers (at least the MMC 6500) are a great
set of components for the money. I paid $265

I have Polk speakers that have been on back order finally on the way!

When installing speakers do you use any special tools, like a door panel removal tool shown at Crutchfield ?

Tools

I havw a garage full of tools and I have tried a couple of those
panel removal tools. What I've found works best is a painters
4 in 1 tool. Kinda like a chisel ended, flat with a curved cut out.
I also think the Crutcfield instructions are awsome.

Note you have to buy or make adaptors to mount the speakers.

I'll look for a 4 in 1 painter's tool. I had planned to reuse the stock speaker mounts by cutting away the old speaker from the mount.

OK

I wanted to save my stock speakers for re-installation when I'm ready to sell the car, and, I bought my speakers from Crutchfield and they include the mounts / adaptors in the price.

I'm buying the speakers from cardomain, they are running a good sale on speakers now. I have been reading up on Crutchfield and noticed the panel tool.

Nice that Crutchfield would include the adapters.

I'm planning to find out how far a 4runner will go, as this will be my last one (i'm on my 6th runner).

I could be tempted by a diesel version if one showed up in the US ?

Center Channel

Any one know the stock size of the center channel on a 03 with the JBL system. And does that grill just pop off the dash?

Also does anyone have a link or pdf version of any install sheets for a 03 4runner limited. Any help would be appreciated.
 
As luck would have it the back ordered speakers will arrive while I'm on vacation.

Can someone who has upgraded their stock speakers give a rough idea of how long it might take with the speakers in a 2003 runner?

I'm thinking do the rears first before doing the fronts.

The crossover in my '03 nonJBL was a capacitor that cut off the frequency response of the capacitor at around 4K. This essentially puts the output of the tweeter out of the range of the human hearing. Changing that crossover point to 2K by adding a commercial crossover or changing the capacitor may improve the imaging of the speaker system to the point where you don't need to replace the drivers.
I upgraded my speakers using a peerless CD midbass 6.5" and a peerless 1" dome tweeter. I crossed over the frequency at 2K using a Linkwitz-Riley 2nd order crossover that I built myself. The result was very good.

If I had it to do over, I would first change the capacitor. This may be a $5.00 improvement that would do my frugal heart good.
The exact value of the capacitor you would need I can't tell you off the top of my head.
