Factory Tire Carrier

I used the qwerky search feature with it only coming up with things that had nothing to do with what I was looking for. I just bought a '94 SR5 (for $750 :biggrin2: ) and have since seen them pop up all over town like I'm playing GTA, anyways, I have seen a couple with a swing out tire carrier ( http://myweb.cableone.net/eday/toyota/pages/4Runner (11).htm ). I want this so bad its disgusting, what exact model had these? Should I just go to junk yards to find the parts? Thank you and Ill be posting pictures up soon on that forum.

Tire Carrier.

I also really want a Swinging Tire Carrier but from what I've read in the past, It's alot of work to add a factory type tire carrier to your 4Runner if it didnt already come with one from the factory because of the structural bracing that is required on the body to hold the Swing without bending anything.

Im not sure if there is a specific model that came with the tire swing but if you want one your best options are to buy another 4Runner that has a tire swing from the factory already OR you can buy/custom fabricate a bumper that has a tire swing on it, which is what I hope to do, once I can afford to have one built.

This is made by Big Country Customs in BC, Canada. You could probably find a local shop that can custom fabricate stuff like this. Im going to have a local shop build a bumper very similar to that one, unless I can get BCC to ship me a bumper just like that but I dont know if they will.

yeah I have seen similiar to the second picture where they use another brand wheel carrier, but id imagine having to hinge it and everything on a 4runner w/ out one already would be a pain...

Yeah, to put a tire carrier on like the one in the picture I posted, you need to have a custom bumper made that can handle the forces exerted by the weight of the tire because all of the weight is being held up by the part where the swing meets the bumper; I guess its some type of bearing? I havent read much into the components used.

Well, these only came in 2 years 1990 & 1991 (When the headlights were still "indented")... In 1992 and later(2nd Gen of course), the headlights look like yours, "popped out" (1994) and deleted this awesome tire carrier.. Yeah I love it, but I also like your headlights because you can change the Bulbs and not have to change the whole Headlight like on mine(1990).

Nothing is impossible but he doesn't have the bracing built in for this tire carrier. I've read about a few installs (and some abandonded attempts). You will have to weld in bracing on the inside of the rear pillar to make this work.

Your best bet is to go with a custom bumper with a swing out carrier as shown by Red.

Also, the factory unit won't hold the weight of more than a 33" tire even with the internal bracing. I'd go with an aftermarket too, even tho they are pricey.

People seem quite knowledgable about the rear tire carrier and associated structure. I have a 1990 Gen 2 that has a crushed tail gate.

What year tail gates will work with the swing rear tire carrier? Is the tail gate built differently inside to accomodate the spare tire weight or will any similar model tail gate work?

Bumping an old thread...

Just wondering if anyone has attempted this in the years since this posting. I love the rear carrier look and functionality.

I have a 1993 runner but its original tailgate rusted out and was replaced by a 1990 or 1991 tailgate with the appropriate hookups and reverse lights for the swing carrier (if you use a stock '93 tailgate you'll want to move the reverse lights towards the tail lights so they're not hidden by the tire). Also as luck would have it the carrier underneath the truck has a snapped cable, so I'd rather invest in the swing arm if possible!

Hopefully someone has a good solution.

Anyway, there is a write up somewhere of someone (don't remember who) who had a 2nd gen without the factory option of a swing out tire carrier, and then retrofitted one from a junkyard to their rig. I remember finding it while I was researching about tire carrier options. If I'm not mistaken, it was someone with a white 2nd gen. Hope you find it!

so I did this 2-3 years ago on my 94.

to do it 'right' you would need the internal bracing from the 90-91

I didn't have that piece so I made internal pieces out of some 3/16" that fit the inside curve with some fender washers..i didn't get any pics of them because I was pressed for time and trying to do this by myself..I think there is still a 3/4" wrench rattling around in there.
basically used the hinge point as a guide.

if you already have the 90-91 tailgate you are a step ahead. again I had to make some internal bracing to fit the inside of the tailgate bracket. I used diamond plate to make a valence where the stock license plate mount was

took me two years but I finally found the two little plastic pieces that clip into the hinge points

i had to tweek my tire mount to work with a 35" spare so I spliced it and raised it about 4" to clear the rear bumper

the splice is bolted, rosette welded to each piece and a bead running along the top and bottom of the plates. 1.5 to 2 years into it's life of hauling a 35" spare it's still sitting where I first mounted it with no issues like cracking or sagging.

I bought my '90 new. It came with the factory swing out spare tire carrier. It's rattled since Day One. I hate it, but it was the only 5-speed they had, so I bought it. I used to shim it up using a folded piece of an old leather belt. Then I just stopped carrying the spare on it at all.

I keep meaning to buy the tailgate mounted license plate/backup light thing, and just ditch that carrier...just haven't got around to it yet.

that's an interesting question. I am inclined to say you won't have them. You could try feeling back there but more than likely you won't be able to get your hand back there (i dropped a 19mm wrench when i did my install, it's still stuck back there)
You might be able to see back there using a mirror and flash light.
You will need to pull the interior trim for access.

if it there the chances of you drilling your sheet metal and getting the holes to line up with the internal thread holes of the factory brace are extremely high IMO
