FAIL- Removed "inspection" cover on T-Case Actuator

Help! I made a HUGE mistake. I removed the "inspection" cover on the transfer case actuator. I was careful to watch the position of the assembly attached to it. When putting it back on, there is a small gear in the back that has moved and will not allow the cover assembly back on. I am not in a position to remove the transfer case or able to have it serviced at this time.

Can I remove the actuator, leaving the actuator rod behind, put it back together, and put back on?

Any other suggestions?
