So two days ago, I was in my car with some friends listening to music when we decided to go somewhere. Well I usually just flick the key to start because of the automatic starter and when the engine started it just died immediately and the check engine light came on. I don't know why so I just turned the key to off and restarted the car. It worked the but I wanted to know if I should be worried? I haven't had any previous issues in the year I've owned the car.

happened to me once too. nothing wrong, just a fluke. I too, flick the key and let the autostart do it's thing. I suspect it disengages at an earlier point than a person would. Keeping the starter engaged while the engine revs up is bad. Starters run a fraction of idle speed, say 200 rpm. first thing the engine does is go to 1000 rpm or higher... anyway, I think it's conservative to keep the starter running longer. I havent heard of anyone replacing one so thats good.
An interesting experiment will be for someone to hold the key in the start position too long. Will the starter cut out anyway?

This has happened to me once or twice with my 03. Seems like a hiccup where for some reason the starter disengages early when using the flick method.
I am pretty sure that the starter would disengage if you held the key in the start position. Anyone willing to try?

My '07 has done it too. I trace it to operator error in my case. Usually it happens when the computer mis-guesses and it needs to engage the starter for a few extra seconds. I, expecting the vehicle has already started, move the shifter to R or D. The second the shift lever leaves the P the starter dis-engages and the vehicle fails to start.

I know i'm reviving an old thread, but my 03 V6 has been hesitating whenever I start it. Never fires quick and right away, usually with some lag. However, once its turned off and I go to start it again, it catches right away. Well today today, after trying to start it up a second time it would not...all i got was clicks. Battery seems fine as all the lights come on and the dash etc. Could this mean by starter is gone? DO i have to change the whole thing?

Sounds like the battery to me. A bad battery can allow all of the lights on the dash etc. to come on but not have enough CCA's (cold cranking amps) to start the engine. How old is the battery? I would have it tested at an auto parts store.

Hi guys, recently with pandemic I didn't start my V6 2005 T4R. The problem was no start afetr a week, and it died. First I thinked a Battery or alternator issue, no... after that I reviewed all conections and fuses witha voltimeter, nothing... I reviewed all forums talking about cilinder head position sensor, notihing... I asked for a key problem and the anti thief system, nothing... Finally almost for a give up I pulled out the Starter motor and it wasn't doing nothing, carbs change and I recovered my T4R. TIP, I see a lot of videos to get outy the starter taking off the driver wheel and brakes, but I discovered a easiest way to pull it out from under the engine...

Just for future reference. The problem the OP and several others had is likely with the immobilizer. You know the chip in the key. I've had it happen probably about a half a dozen times in ten years in my Tundra. It's always after it's been left with the key in the ignition for a while. I just take the key out for a few seconds and flip it over for good measure, stick it back in, and it always starts right up. I'm assuming it "forgets" what it read from the key and has to read it again.
